I'm not a massive fan of this growing trend for applause during a game if I'm honest. Would rather it's done before the game when you are better set to concentrate and reflect on lost loved ones rather than just clapping for a bit while a games on. I still take part and respect it, but it's not for me. Hugo, you've taken away the need for me to try to write something fair. 👏

For me: Family member passes away. Family ask club to do this. Club oblige. Fans choose to clap. It’s essentially left to the fans to choose. I feel there’s no wrong with it. I had no idea regarding either 3 this weekend. Clapped out of respect to the request but it you don’t want to. Don’t. Cannot criticise the club on this. It's not about whether applause is a good thing or not. I don't think many would disagree that it's a nice gesture. It's about it being over-used to the point where it loses its significance, such as three times in one match. But that’s the easiest thing to “answer” It’s not really about us. If the family think it’s got meaning- then it’s “significant” Next, we’ll be criticising birthdays and marriage proposals on here for lack of significance: Ohhhhh really, you asked her in Paris? You do know Paris is the city of love, and that people get engaged in Paris everyday?!? I’m surprised she said yes.... Sure we can have an opinion as to whether the clapping is for us, or whether we even like the clapping. But it’s not on us to decide whether that gesture meets a sufficient level of significance.

I too am drawn over this.
I think that there should be a cut off point (60 mins?). Any Gashead that dies before 60 and their family want a minutes applause, then we should let them have it. Anyone over 60 should get the mention before the game treatment.
I am in my mid 40's, so people dieing in their 50's and younger is significant and likely to be leaving younger kids. The family will take something out of 8000 thinking about this person for a minute.
Was the Oxford one for the young man who died in the Yate car crash? Left two very young kids behind, one small moment in a fraction of a second that changes the lives of so many.
For the record, I am hoping for the before the game treatment...

Tributes at halftime for me when everyone is in the ground. If Vince reads out the names and asks for a minute's applause immediately after I think it would be a much more fitting tribute with far more applauding. And no doubt Goodnight Irene would ring out from all sections of the crowd immediately after.

Halftime would be even less poignant and well-observed though, as thousands are away from their positions, be it drinking/eating/smoking/using the loo.
A half-arsed clap is still better than one that's ignored or disrupted by fans doing their halftime "rituals"

I personally have no issue with how is currently is but I agree that having a lot can begin to lose its value and meaning. But I will continue to respect it, even though I dont know those gasheads personally.
However, I do think, as already mentioned, doing them all on the 12th minute to represent the 12 man, would be the most fitting way for everyone. The scoreboard on the 12th minute can state the names of all the fallen gasheads since the previous home game and once all names have been mentioned, then a 1 minute applause with Goodnight Irene could begin. This makes more sense and is more structured.
But again, I will still respect what currently happens but I do see/understand the OP's thoughts with this thread.

I personally feel a section in the programme is sufficient enough, and is something that can be kept by friends and family.
Fortunately I have not been in the position to have to request something like this so I guess the best people to judge are those that have?

If clubs with fan bases like Man Utd & Liverpool clapped every time a supporter passed on, they would be clapping from start to finish every match. I know it’s a bit of a sensitive subject but I honestly think if & when we get a large electronic scoreboard it would be nice to put up the names & perhaps photos of the deceased fans & have one around of applause as someone said earlier, last Saturday by the time the third name appeared it became slightly confusing & diluted.
