This will be a fairly short match report for three reasons 1) I am a bit busy with Christmas coming up 2) With no new Manager as yet I can neither be too praiseworthy or too critical of either the Board or the Management and 3) there is something of continuity between the two games post DC!! and that my friends is IMO a step forward and now I look forward to hopefully more step forwards.
Bonham 6 Didn't have a great deal to do apart from the goal but did ok and stood up well to the well hit free kick in the first half.
J. Clarke 8 Christ a goal from JC and one any striker would have been proud of ..kept his cool and managed to put it in the only spot that the keeper stood no chance of saving. For going forward I just wish it could have been Nichols for the way it was taken and apart from that his general defending was tight and pretty commanding.
Lockyer 7 Did a good job of patrolling the dangerous or should I say potentially dangerous Ched Evans and was steady without being spectacular. Distribution will never be up to the standard of his general play but all we can ask for is that our defence limit the opposition to a few chances and then we always have a chance.
Craig 7 Word for word the same as Lockyer and perhaps the supporters who doubt him will take into account that celebration and realise he is a gashead and does care as well as being a capable player.
Kelly 6.5 Steady game and there has been an improvement in his two under Coughlin and I put that down to having Holmes-Dennis in front of him and I see no reason to change things at the moment.
Rodman 8 MOM A player who needed and now may get the confidence from the fact that he might actually get the third start in a row on Wednesday. Pacy, direct, skilful, hard working, capable of a variety of crosses and also the possibility he might actually score-exactly what we were missing under DC. Well there is one New signing already!! He was involved in so much of the good things that went on and made sure that really the Fleetwood defence hardly had a moments peace-Quality.
Upson 7 What I like about him is his involvement in the game and very much a case of Steady Eddie in the middle. Ok there are always a couple of wayward passes but that aside, most of the rest is that of a General in midfield -prompting, always fighting for the ball and showing the qualities of a player who has played many games. My only question would be if these qualities are better used alongside a Sercombe/Lines type of player or an Ollie Clarke. I will leave it to the Manager to make that decision.
O. Clarke 5.5 A just above average display. Gives everything but needs more consistency about his game but does provide that extra bit of protection which possibly the Lines/Sercombe player doesn't.
Holmes-Dennis 7 This bloke looks a class player and without going over the top- provides the type of support that Michael Kelly needs and together they make a good partnership. When he got forward he looked very good and made things look easy that were in fact difficult. Let's put it this way he may make the left back position his own if we sign a decent winger in January but if not he is a very capable wing back playing as he did yesterday.
Reilly 7 Got something about him that Nichols hasn't and that is an eye for a goal. His goal was brave and instinct to get down and head the ball in from close range and was unlucky not to end up with two or three especially with the rasping shot in the first half that rocketed off the inside of the post and was unfortunately not put in from a yard out by the inrushing Rodman.
Jakubiak 6.5 Should have scored when set up by Rodman early on instead of blasting the ball well over but was a constant thorn in Fleetwood's side with his clever control and skilful direct running. We now actually look like we might score goals and whilst it will be good to get one or two strikers in we do look like we can score goals and there is even the potential of a partnership in Reilly and Jacubiak-only time will tell.
Subs: Nichols 5.5 Didn't get very long but showed some intelligent play without really getting in the box.
Matthews 5 Not on long enough to really make a difference.
Lines 7 Came on and took control of things and spread the ball around and the Lines/Upson partnership did look good but of course it has to be taken into account that we were up against ten men at the time.
Crowd 8 Best atmosphere in quite a while and deserved the drama at the end but could have done without the Cotterell chants as he may turn out to be a good choice and if it is him we must get behind him and give him and our team a chance. Ex City should make no difference at all as Ex is the important word.
Ref 6 Bloody clown but in all fairness he was probably perfect for a game against a Joey Barton side that personified their Manager and generally his decisions were correct although he does give the look of being unfit!
Fleetwood 5 Tough opponents who play very much in the vein of their Manager with constant needless fouling and hardly surprising that over half their side ended up in the referees book and two sent off(maybe three) including their Manager and the short fat bold one whoever he was!!
GC- Consistent in selection and what I have seen so far we could do worse but going into the transfer window I feel that we could probably do with an experienced Manager but all I would ask is that let's get it done soon.If they are going to give it to him then get on with it because time is not on our side although it could be said if yesterday could be the start of a winning run then we do make ourselves more time to hopefully get the decision right and one small point- if the decision of the Board is Cotterill then at least give the bloke a chance because if it happens the result of any "getting on his back" could see disastrous consequences. .
It will be interesting to see the line up on Wednesday. I would suggest that it might be very, very similar to the last two games as I think GC does really know what he is doing and will have some CONSISTENCY in his selection which IMO is good. Very much something which DC should have learnt and that is if it isn't broke then leave it alone. There are now more names that I EXPECT to see in the team on Wednesday. Bonham, James Clarke, Lockyer, Craig, Kelly, Rodman, Upson, Holmes-Dennis, Jacubiak,....bloody hell and I have the feeling that Reilly and Ollie Clarke could be the other two!!! We shall just have to wait and see but win or lose or draw I am actually looking forward to the next game-something I haven't been able to say for quite a long time! Even the Club statement about Stadium/Training ground has not been able to deflate me at all except "Nice to hear you..to hear you nice!" even if the news is not what I really wanted to hear.
To all who read this I wish all Gasheads a very Merry Christmas and see you on Wednesday. UTG
