Attachment DeletedSeen here front row extreme right. Wonderful left winger who had a very fierce shot.Skinned Liverpool at Eastville in torrential rain when we put 4 past them. Went to Cardiff City and sadly the Dark side of Bristol, but a great player in his day. Born in Teignmouth and sadly died in 2011.

My Dad told me that when he was a kid Peter Hooper was lodging a few doors away from where he lived in Speedwell. When the kids were having a kick around he would sometimes come out and join in. Can’t imagine Premiership players doing that now.

My boyhood hero, along with Dai Ward. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, as my memory is not what it was, but I seem to quite vividly recall Peter Hooper taking a penalty against Tony Macedo of Fulham (must have been a cup game), and hitting the ball straight at him. Macedo grabbed the ball, but then folded in the middle and subsided into the back of the net. Never saw anyone hit the ball as hard as Hooper - and that ball was heavy, especially when wet.

Nice info - I can’t help but wonder why you’ve started this thread though? Nosey bugger I know! An occasional series. Last time was Alex Munro which went down well. Those of us of a certain age recall the players of quality who came our way. Characters every one. Ian Hamilton my all time favourite still attends games.

Amazing timing mate.
We put this article up today, all about Christmas Day
Including this photo of Peter, as he scored a hat-trick in the Boxing Day match in 1956.

My dad had loads of stories bout the golden era of Rovers history. Three I remember involving Hooper: -
We have a free kick against Birmingham current England keeper Gil Merrick, is lining up his wall...left a bit, right a bit...suddenly there's the Eastville roar. Merrick spins slowly round to spy the ball nestling in the corner...just too quick for him! Still farting about with the wall when the horse had bolted.
Rovers are having one of those days..doing everything but score whilst every effort Grimsby have goes in. Finally at 0-6 fate takes pity on us and we get a stonewall penalty ...time for Hooper to extract some consolation out of the misery. Everyone is around the Grimsby box except their centre forward, loitering mid pitch, and our keeper on the edge of his box. Hooper belts it as hard as he can ... 1-6? Don't you believe it...the crossbar is rattled the ball flies back over everyone's heads to the lone forward who advances a few yards and lobs the keeper, nil seven whilst the crossbar is still bouncing about at the other end.
Pre-season and it's a session for first teamers, reserves and triallists, as was our habit at the time someone had shouted down a Welsh mineshaft and a man mountain keeper had rocked up to try his luck. Before the session officially gets underway a few players help him settle in with a few kick ins for him to field. However, even when Hooper "takes something off it" he still hits a mean ball, breaks the lads fingers and he's never seen at Rovers again! Probably the shortest trial in the club's history!

Going back to Hooper any free kick or penalty nearly always resulted in a goal.He had a really ferocious shot and I renember the ball boys begind the goal sgaking their hands after trying to stop any of his shots that just missed the goal back by the half time scoreboards

My dad told me that whenever there was a free kick around the box, a shout came out "give it to Hooper" on account of his powerful kick.
