Don’t get me wrong, I am among those who think that GC should now be given the job, at least until the end of the season.
But before we go ahead and do that, I do think we need to acknowledge that we have lost a lot of coaching and managerial experience with the departure of DC and MS. Everything is going very nicely for GC at the moment with 3 wins on the bounce. But imagine if in a month or two we experience the opposite, and have 3 or 4 defeats in a row and get dragged back into the relegation zone. The mood of the fans would be quite different to what it is today, and the players would be more nervous as a result of the situation. What experience coild GC draw on then, or who could he turn to for support and advice?
So I do think that we should go ahead and give the role to GC for the rest of the season (and do it ASAP so he has full control of any January transfer dealings). But I do think that we also need to appoint someone with experience to work with him as a first team coach / director of football...call it what you will. An experienced head to get us to the end of the season, whom GC can lean on when things aren’t going quite as swimmingly as they are right now.
Any thoughts? And if you agree, any names you would suggest who would be willing and available to take such a role for the rest of the season?

Good point, but to counter it I would say that Hargreaves is an experienced coach also, has done very well with our U23’s and Lee Mansell has also been doing good things with the U18s. He’s also a former captain of the squad and you can bet his man-management will be up there with DCs given how he led on the pitch.
I still like pirates idea of getting Ben Garner involved too.

Yes, can’t disagree with any of that. Lee M mentioned and Chris H, also an important part of the team. I wonder if GC and CH were to be confirmed until season’s end if Lee M would step into CHs position in the development squad. Perhaps this is one of the advantages and part of DCs legacy of having a good team around him. When things were going well istr CH being mentioned as a good shout if DC were to be poached by anyone. Fact of the matter is that whatever decision is made looking forward is a risk. Appoint GC, and if it goes wrong it will be “Should have appointed X” or if they appoint X and it goes wrong then it will be “Should have stayed with GC” or even “Should have appointed Y”
Of course - all these with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight.
For the record - I don’t know what the answer is and glad I don’t have to make the call! 🤪

What good did all DC's & MS's experience bring them if they couldn't work out that playing a settled side would get us out of the bottom four?
CG & SH probably know the game as well as the likes of Flynn & Garner and also know a lot of how Rovers operate as a club. The alternative is to go for managers like Holloway who've failed elsewhere.
I don't get this view GC needs experience alongside him as he didn't need any help 4 games ago and he's got TW to help with recruitment.

Whoever we appoint if it goes well ‘fans’ will say I told you he was the right man and if it goes wrong most of the same ‘fans’ will say I told you he was the wrong man!! Similarly if Wael pulled off the deal of the century and got us an all singing all dancing ground everyone would hail him as the the saviour and no one who has slagged him off would hold their hands up to it. That’s just the nature of football/life. For what it’s worth though it seems like giving GC the job is as much of a risk as anyone else. After DC went it wouldn’t have crossed my mind to give him a shot and I was keen on Ollie coming back (however my reasons would have been similar to the reaction GC has got, no nonsense pressing the ball, do the best with what you’ve got approach). Front-foot football always creates more chances and that's what we need to survive. More luck goes your way and it's better to watch than the predictable defensive midfield crap we've had to put up with under Clarke this season. GC has it spot on so far and he's left the players in no doubt at all what their task is. I for one thinks he can keep it going until we're safe, but I hope he doesn't do what Ward did when he got us to League 2 safety before returning to dull defensive tactics.

You’ve just about nailed it for me congas. You make your own luck. And anyway we are talking League one, not the premiership where you get punished for any mistake. This ‘parking the bus’ thingy is history. It might be that you’re forced into it but not as a game plan to start with. |

If they do go ahead with GC and CH then surely they need to find ( at least) a new Development Squad coach. |

Love this man and his attitude , talks like a fan and must have motivational skills as well as coaching ability but think the Burton game will pose a different challenge for him, big crowd, high expectations , and a team who's mindset is confident they will win BUT they have to approach the game with the same determination they have shown these last few games otherwise it wont happen!if they take there foot of the 'gas' even just a little they will come a cropper! sorry to be a doom monger but seen it happen so many times when expectations are high! so come on Rovers give us a home performance to treasure and a happy new year, show the same fight and determination evident in last few away games and you will prevail, if GC can instill this attitude into a team that face a very different challenge then give him the job, as for a mentor Ollie? love him but dont think he is one to keep in the background!Lenny would be perfect but think he is in role somewhere else?here's one for you ;John Ward! now now calm down! ,leave aside matters on the field, he has a wise old head and a very calm persona,just a thought!

Time to get waels wallet out else it will cost more if we go down,gc has taken a lot of pressure off the board with these wins so time to reward him and give him some pocket money
Was looking for a thread earlier about grilling the board,what a difference and few wins make

They have to support GC or whoever they appoint as much as they can in January. It may be true that the Wage Cap has already been max-ed out so perhaps we'll have to try to get a few out before getting one or two in, but as long as the wages are within the limit there should be no reason they can't fork out a decent amount for transfer fees or signing-on fees, surely? I welcome anyone who knows more about how the system works to tell me otherwise as I'd rather be fully aware of the facts rather than blindly stating requests that are not feasible. |

Commenting on the potential set up, a lot depends on whether we promote CH into the first team role or leave him with the U23s. If CH stays with the U23 we have a vacancy for an assistant manager too. If that was the case I would offer it to Ben Garner. |
