I don't think we need a squad of 27 average players, we need a squad of 20 or 21 with some good players in it

Last week I was talking to someone and he said (in jest) Clarke filled the squad with average players so that they were easier to swap

"I couldn’t stand in Jonno’s way either because of the contract that he’s earned, which is outstanding for him and allows him to develop his life off the field as well,” he said. I think most people develop their lives moving from Coventry. lol

Agree that is what Gerry Francis had to work with a smaller squad, last time we got into the second tier, quality not quantity I'm not sure we had a huge amount of quality in that side, but we had a good gameplan and every player knew their role. We had a lot of players picked up from non-league, like Purnell, Wilmott, Reece, and lower league pros like Twentyman and Jones, but we also had a fair few players of a high quality around that time, some who dropped down and some who were on their way up. Martyn and Penrice played in the top flight (left just before or during the promotion season) Parkin had played previously in the top flight Yates went on to play in the top flight Holloway went on to play in the top flight Devon White went on to play in the top flight Carl Saunders had played previously in the top flight All in all, a good mix, a fantastic team spirit and a hard taskmaster of a manager who had the respect of everyone.

Interesting how people see different sides of the coin. I'm wondering WHY we need to apparently pay a lot more than others... For pretty normal / average players. Not a criticism of the players as such, or a comment on them, but more on our situation / history. BTW - I'm sure we all take a pinch of salt alongside comments from managers trying to explain to their fans why they sold decent players to Lge 1 rivals... In an important transfer window. The cost of living is a lot higher in Bristol than somewhere like Coventry, and we're not in London, so there's not the draw of the big city. If potentialsigningd did their research better, or if we were better at selling the place, we'd attract better players I reckon. We could also buy some flats to offer players as temporary accommodation. I think that'd help We have always paid hotels bills for players moving to Bristol. Up until his loan to Shrewsbury we were still paying Paines hotel bill.(at least that was what I was told)!

The squad is far too big with a number of 'first team' players who haven't even made the bench for weeks. Three keepers and now too many central midfielders. Trim it down in the summer. Can always get free short term loans from time to time to add cover if needed.

Relegation would have cost us more than these two players, so it has to be seen as proof of intent and a no-brainer. Teams are built around a strong spine, something we've lacked all season. We've added a midfield anchor to allow others to venture forward and what looks like the decent target player we've all been crying out for. Coughlan's got them playing on the front foot with high energy levels and his record so far is second to none. The only concern for me is the bad habit of giving the ball away too cheaply, Olle Clarke in particular. Wipe that out and we'll soon be safe and playing with less tension.

Completely agree, very prevalent against Peterborough IMO. Linesy is culpable too for the most part, despite also being the one that could thread a pass for than anyone else. Think we'll see Ollie alongside Ogogogogogogogogogogogogogogogo going forward.
