Problem is drop Sercombe and replace him with whom. Personally thats why i advocate 3-5-2 with whatvwe have. Get Ogogo and Clarke/Upson in the middle to do the grunt work and at least give Sercombe a chance to create something and get beyond and up with the front 2. He may have been poor this season, but for me the above is our best chance of staying up. We dont exactly scream out a load of options I agree with this. Playing players out of position works for the odd game here and there, but not permanently. Sercs is a CAM. Good at driving forward, technically good with his feet and can finish. In a side where we can’t score, one of our most gifted finishers is on the wing. He's not really being asked to play as an out and out winger though is he? Rodman on the right sticks to the touch line whereas Sercs has to hold a left midfield position when we are out of possession but when we have the ball he has licence to drift inside. A player of his undoubted ability should be able to cope with playing a left sided midfield role. I agree with Mr Parker that ideally he would be at the point of a midfield three in a 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 formation. We have the players to make that work but GC is stuck on 4-4-2 which is something a lot of fans were desperate for DC to do!

____________Bonham J.Clarke__Lockyer___Craig__Kelly __________Ogogo___Lines ____Rodman__Sercombe__THD _______________JCH Personally would like to see this for a few games. More balance in that side IMO. Yeah loads of teams play 4-2-3-1 these days . It gives you the two defensive midfielders in the middle which Cogs went for yesterday but also the attacking playmaker in front of them. It also allows the wide attacking players to attack more because the defensive midfielders can cover them a bit more out wide. I don’t like 3-5-2 I don’t think we’ve got the players for it but 4-2-3-1 is the way I’d go. Nichols should have definitely started yesterday if lines wasn’t fit because we were missing out two creative players and therefore created nothing. That part isn’t rocket science, it happened v Wycombe and it happened again yesterday. We could have the players for 5-3-2 or 3-5-2. Leads or Rodman as right wing back, THD on the left. Clarke, Locks and Craig at the back. Ogogo, Upson/Clarke and Sercs in midfield with Nichols and JCH up front.

More balance in that side IMO. I see we share the same frustration about Sercombe's role. This is a composition like i was talking about on the match thread. Two playing wide to extend the defense could make things easier for Sercombe and Clarke Harris. The second intuition coming after yesterdays match is that we coul use more Nichols.
Could he play on the left ? He was tested there some time ago i think.

He will be the first one out the door if we go down and we will probably accept the first pathetic offer we receive for him!
He's out of contract in the summer, so we wouldn't receive a fee for him.

Sercombe should be in the middle of the pitch.
He fills in the blanks out wide, the manager and board should be looking at players now, a wide player or 2 is defintely something we need.

Amongst this talk of formations and who to play istm that of the three areas of the team, defence, midfield and attack no one area has had a settled group of players. Only in defence has there been any stability and that has been the CHs. FBs have changed, the midfield changed and the attack has changed. Amongst all this instability perhaps it’s not surprising that we’ve struggled. We all know D.C. liked to tinker with teams but even then there were some players who were always regulars. Put this together with the inability to get a striker to go with Nichols or Reilly for most of the season and we’re vulnerable to relegation. We’ve blamed our strikers but from what I’ve seen and read from others what’s really done us is our inability to create chances and control midfields which we have done in the last two seasons, less so last season I know. And for that the poor form of Lines and Sercombe has been crucial. To see those two return to form for the last part of this season will determine if we go down or not imo. UTG!

Whether he plays wide or centre midfield, ffs Liam has to start; talk about turning up, Ollie Clarke was ******* awful yesterday, along with agogo, what a shocking pairing, hard to disagree that we need a bit of creativity, which will only happen if GC plays a pair from, Lines, Upson, possibly Rodman & Liam, without creativity in midfield we are ******, and yes I would definitely pick Liam in centre midfield.

If he wants to stick with 442 Then rodman right , Mathews left and sercombe or lines in middle with any of the many defensive midfielders we’ve got would give us balance. Yesterday’s midfield four had zero balance.

Thing is even though I’m a big fan of Cogs and he’s given us a fighting chance I’m worried that he can’t see the basics in what we’ve just discussed. Fighting spirit will only get us so far. This season under DC the balance wasn’t there and we lacked the spirit , now we’ve got the spirit but there’s been a few games where the teams been obviously not the right balance and that’s not hindsight I was one of many saying before kick off yesterday that there’s not enough creativity in that side and we’re fearing another Wycombe type performance. We got one.

Because he is being played wide you say? He has not showed up when he has played centre-mid,attacking centre-mid,wide left or wide right. Cant tackle to save his life, fails to get his head up and pick a pass, most of his set pieces including his god awful over hit corners have been useless. For me he was great last season but a passenger this season, not good enough to play in a centre midfield 2 and even when dc played him in a 3 he was pi** poor. Massive let down and his career is in serious decline imo. The team have been very poor but that in itself is not a good enough reason for not turning up for a whole season. Wow, you constantly bash me for being negative then single out a player in a squad full of underachievers. Just wow..

Quite a few in the squad are not actually underachieving, they are just not good enough. James clarke has been more influential than liam sercombe which says it all for me.

I agree; most are not good enough, a few have shown glimpses that they could be, but aren't anywhere consistent enough to make it. There are loads of things against us; we are too slow, have little/no creativity, no real width and don't score enough goals. Sunderland were not great but they didn't need to be, and many others before them have been the same. I said in the summer before a ball was kicked that I had a bad feeling about this season and unfortunately it looks like my fears were warranted. At the moment our only hope is to fluke a few wins and hope there are enough worse than us, but from what ive seen we definitely deserve our place in the relegation places.
...Still think it is wrong to single out one player and make a thread about them though.

Pathetic thread, he is our best player by far and the only one left worth paying to go and watch.
Our squad is so devoid of quality it’s laughable.
Suppose the OP would prefer a team of Sinclairs running around like headless chickens, everything that is wrong with this club, so much stems from the fanbase.

Apart from the odd strike I’m not too sure what sercombe brings to our overall game being honest!

I would agree that an in form Sercombe is our best player, or at least, one of them. I really enjoyed watching him last season. I think the point is though that he has not been in any kind of form all season, wherever he has played. Without his goals, he contributes little and therefore yes, if I didn't retain that hope that Sercombe will rediscover his scoring touch, I probably would prefer that Sinclair played. At least he'd contribute.

Has he been our best player by far and the only one worth paying to watch this season in your opinion? For what it's worth I would try and find a place for him in our starting XI but as GC seems pretty rigid in playing 4-4-2 he will have to be satisfied with starting from the left. He does have undoubted quality and should be capable of making a far bigger impression than he's shown so far this season even though he's not in his preferred position.

I suspect Sercombe cant be bothered because he already has a club lined up. after all they said Portsmouth were looking and if they don't go up, that's where he will go. Meanwhile, Lines has a range of passes which is good, but he doesn't tackle, a bit tippy tappy round the ankles is what you get. Ollie Clarke on his day is ok, buts that it just "OK". Upson relegated with MK Dons, who then decided they didn't want him, and so Clarke gets him in. On his day, a bit ok. Meanwhile up front we have a new player who can jump and head the ball, a player that is strong and can run with the ball a player who is technically ok but cannot hit a barn door and another who is ok but needs the ball at his FEET. And there you have it, the legacy that is Daryl Clarke

But if you’re talking about legacy don’t forget his two promotions, his rebuilding of the club 2014-16, our best position in league 1 this century. By all means give us your opinion but for accuracy and balance best to include all his legacy not just selective bits that fit your opinion. Weve parted company, let’s move on and support GC. UTG!
