The funny thing about yesterdays game was that I bet most people were worried when they saw the team sheet yesterday at 2pm! It looked lacking in attacking attentions with all three defensive central midfielders playing and lacking any attacking width in the side I certainly thought we would be struggling against a Blackpool side with one of the best defensive records in the division. Thankfully I and many others were wrong and GC was right and perhaps we have found the answer to the pretty well season problem to date of how to set up at home and get the best from the players we have..
It really annoys me when I read that the opposition were " very poor" when we win however I can remember many very poor teams this season who have beaten us at the Mem this season and it is totally disrespectful to the team to come out with this. A team are in a certain position at this stage of a season for a reason- because they deserve it. We deserve to be in the relegation zone and Blackpool deserve to be where they are- it is not a fluke-it is called form.
This was very much a deserved victory in every aspect as for the first time at home this season in the League we hit four goals and actually looked a far better team than our position suggests. There have been signs on our travels that we are not a bad side and yet our home form both in performances and results has said anything but! Anyway enough of that ,let us analyse the performance through the individual performances.
Bonham 7 Not a flawless display but definitely more like the keeper at the start of his loan to us. There was nearly a terrible handling error to gift Blackpool a goal early in the game but he managed to recover from the slip and go on to perform to a level which again cries out for us to make him a permanent signing in the summer.
Partington 6 The weakest of the back four with too many crosses finding their way across the goal from his side but there were times when he did look an accomplished player and his height certainly helps us out in situations. He needs to become more consistent in both his defending and in his distribution
Lockyer 8 Against a very tough opponent Tom held his own brilliantly and continued his improved level of performance to an extent that we restricted Blackpool to few opportunities and as a unit showed a willingness to put bodies on the line in defending our goal.
Craig 7.5 Very similar to Tom but not quite as good but in truth both their distributions improved on the last game.Made one particularly brilliant close down and block to prevent a certain goal.
Holmes-Dennis 8 Whether attacking or defending he goes about his game with a look of sheer class. He has everything in his locker and could well be the best signing that DC made and it is ironic that our last Manager did not have him available to him.
Upson 7.5 it continues to amaze me that some people just don't give this player the credit he deserves. Perhaps because he just goes about his business in a quiet way and just gets on with it but for me he is a midfielder who is more than capable of playing both in a defensive and offensive way but is always in there and getting his foot in to nick the ball and then keep his calm in possession and very often playing the simple ball that sets off an attack. Yesterday was probably overall one of his best all round performances.
O. Clarke 5.5 The only player in the side who looked off form but still played an important role in the side and was unlucky not to score with the shot that brought a brilliant save from the keeper but was "let off" by the alert Clarke-Harris for his hat trick. If he had reached his best level yesterday then it could have been the "perfect" midfield because the others were at the top of their game.
Ogogo 8 Is he the new better version of Sinclair? Harasses the opposition at every opportunity and a tiger in the tackle as he relishes every challenge. Could he actually captain the side next season as he drives the team forward by example.
Sercombe 8.5 Back in the centre and back in the form of last season. There were wayward shots but there was a willingness to have a go by a player who is well capable of scoring regularly and some of his movement was fantastic and at times there was some great football played and then when picked out by a superb Jacubiak pass he finished with the coolness of a seasoned striker. Yesterday just proved that you need to play your best players in their best position and that may mean having to set up the team around Sercombe rather than just fitting him into the team. You should never just fit a key player into the team- he should be one of the first names on the team sheet in his strongest position.
Nichols 8.5 Still no goals but a polished performance from possibly our best footballer. Was a handful all game and could we have found the perfect partnership up front but the wrong way around. Its supposed to be "Smash" Clarke-Harris and "Grab" Nichols but who cares as long as the end result is the ball ends up in the opponents net. Like his partner in crime he worryingly went off injured before the end so could we ,having found what looks a good partnership be deprived of both in our next game?
Clarke-Harris 9.5 MOM The perfect performance and for the first time this season we looked dangerous every time we attacked. Won pretty well every ball that came in his direction whether it was head height, mid drift or on the ground he led the usually efficient Blackpool defenders a merry dance from the first minute until he left the pitch injured after picking up his first hat trick. Has GC managed to pick up an ace but I guess that may be taking the praise away from our Head of Scouting. Certainly he possesses all the attributes to be up there with our best strikers. Lets hope yesterday was the start of things to come with two goals poached from close in and the one in between a class finish to what was a really polished movement and about six passes. We can only hope that the injury sustained in the third goal does not keep him out of the side because that could spell disaster.
Subs: Jakubiak 7 Should have had a goal and assist to his name rather than just an assist but looked lively when he came on.
Reilly 4 Even in a short appearance he just looks too light weight but perhaps it is just a confidence thing. I feel appearances from the bench is the best he can hope for.
Sinclair 6 Good to see him back and did well in the few minutes he was on the pitch.
Crowd 5 A good 8500 but rather subdued taking into account the scoreline.
Ref 9 They say a good referee is one you don't notice and this was the best we have had this season. Could have been harsher with the cards and Nichols could easily have been shown a red for a silly challenge but proved the point that you can referee sensibly and not lose control.
Blackpool 5 Obviously made to look worst than what they are and with a 7-0 aggregate our best opponents this season!!
GC- Well he got it right but still has the most difficult task to get two wins on the bounce. His biggest problem is the fact that despite a great win we still find ourselves in the relegation zone and that always brings pressure with it because you know that if you lose a game now you could end up adrift. At least we have the small deal of a semi final on Tuesday to take the pressure off!!
For the first time this season we have managed to get a double over somebody. The test now is whether we can build on this and get something from two away games against opposition who are both around us in the League. Scunthorpe and Gillingham are both beatable but on their day can get a good result and neither are good hunting grounds for us over the years but the truth is that if we fail to pick up at least one victory in the two games then we could almost certainly find ourselves adrift in the relegation zone. Both these fixtures are six pointers and because of that will bring a certain pressure with them. What we have to remember is that ;like us; these teams are near the bottom of the League for a reason and it is important that we "turn up" for these games and compete all over the pitch.
So we move on to Tuesday night and the chance to again come up against one of the best teams in the division and the chance to avenge our defeat last week. We won't be able to field the same side as I believe that either Ogogo or Clarke-Harris has already played for Coventry this season in that tournament.i I think the former. That said I really hope that we take the game to Sunderland by pressurising them up top like we did yesterday and gain ourselves an extra game this season. If you haven't got a ticket yet then go and get one because every extra person improves our chances. UTG
