To be honest watching that today was nailbiting, frustrating and hard work and to report on it is little short of a tedious task and the only good thing about today was that we are a point nearer safety and you couldn't fault any player for not trying but the truth is that we just aren't good enough. Our midfield take a big hit but the truth is that being so devoid of width and sparkle they have not got a chance of being successful as we drop so far back that we have no chance of retaining possession in the opponents half and then we are not tight enough as a unit to get the ball back quickly. I feel sorry for the amount of energy our team use up having to chase around the pitch after opponents who having seen us on numerous videos have no problem in sussing us out quickly and making use of the expanse of the pitch to drag us around and defend our goal so deep that we struggle to get out.
To get a point today was a real bonus but the truth is the 2200 noisy supporters deserve so much better- please take nore Wael when you consider the summer spending because this fine support wont stay around and pay good money forever watching a team devoid of any imagination.
Bonham 9 mom Great second half when he saved us on 5 or 6 occasions including two one against ones.
J. Clarke 7 Defended with enthusiasm and skill but was given a hard time but that was probably due more to limited support from our wide midfielders who really struggle to understand their roles Lockyer 8.5 One absolute gem of a last ditch tackle that prevented a certain goal and read the game well. Much credit must go to both our central defenders and to the goalkeeper for coming away with a clean sheet. Craig 8 like Lockyer had a steady game throughout and won most battles Kelly 4 had a tough game and on numerous occasions ruined his good work by carelessly losing possession.
Sercombe 5 Unlike some other weeks you could not fault his effort but the truth is that he is nowhere near the player of last season. Upson 4 two central midfielders just doesn't work especially with no width. When he did actually have the ball he just has very limited options as to what to do with it and is not fit enough to have to chase players around for ninety minutes. Ogogo 4 Runs around a lot like Sinclair and I have no doubt he is a tiger in the tackle but you have to get somewhere near your opponent to do that and when your team has no real plan to pressurise opponents up high then you are left like him and Upson were for a long time ,chasing shadows. Sinclair 5 Typical Sinclair. Chased about and tried his best and was unfortunate to be substituted as could so easily have been any of four or five.
Reilly 5.5 Good touches at times but saw very little of the ball Clarke-Harris 6 Showed some great control but was well marked most of the time and struggled for quality service.
Subs: Nichols 5.5 Actually had a good attempt at goal but not long enough to really influence the game or perhaps it was too long!! certainly far too long without a goal. Jakubiak 5 promises a lot with his running with the ball but actually achieves very little. Kilgour NOLE On for only about a minute!
GC Not going to criticise him as he is obviously doing his best with the tools he has although I do wonder if you can blame him a little bit for the lack of creative players and wide players- we were always short of width but have released two of our wide players and seems unwilling to give Lines a go to create. he said we were going to battle and we have,he said it would not be pretty and it certainly isn't so really he has given us exactly what is "written on the tin".
Crowd 10 fantastic support. Ref 7 Some lenient decisions but overall did a good job. Coventry 7 Wasteful but played some good expansive football with good wide players . They had everything which we lacked.
We now go into three games which I believe we need 6 points from to survive this season. Will we get them? I am not sure because whilst we are generally hard to beat we also struggle to control possession and our final ball is generally of such a poor quality. We can only hope that Clarke-Harris has his shooting boots with him and also that we have the players available to give us an attacking edge. Its touch and go- we should have enough to win the two home matches and yet I am sure our opponents wont go down without a fight. UTG

Another game where four and today maybe five of the team confirmed they aren’t good enough. So six v eleven and we somehow come away with a point.
I’m really stressed about the next three games and can see us maybe getting two points only potentially if we keep with this sh**e awful midfield.
I think I would give Lines a go and certainly Nichols alongside JCH. We desperately need THD back in some role and as for Rodman who knows what’s going on but his fitness record this year along with Leadbitter is appalling and sadly money wasted.
May sound crazy but if we could I would recall our lad from Swindon and at least have him on the bench .. huge month coming up and truly if we stay up it will mean as much to me as promotion a few years ago.

Thanks to the op for the report. Feel a bit sorry for our defensive midfield players as there is nobody on the pitch to help them out with the stuff they cannot do.

All well and good telling Wael to take note but it's hardly like Darrell wasn't given funds to strengthen. He just seemed to suffer the same fate as Trollope that when he had a bit of money to spend it all started to go wrong.

Thanks to the op for the report. Feel a bit sorry for our defensive midfield players as there is nobody on the pitch to help them out with the stuff they cannot do. Three out of the four midfielders who played yesterday, are defensive midfielders really. Their game is to get the tackles in and stop the opposition playing, but there`s very little attacking creativity in any them. Sercombe is the only one who can make things happen nearer the goal, but he`s having a dreadful season. And there`s no genuine width in any of them. It`s a waste of time sticking any of them out wide, where they look like a fish out of water. Had to work yesterday so couldn`t go, but when I saw the line up, my heart sank. Thought another defeat looked on the cards.
Was extremely glad with a point come five o clock.

Given the only option we have would have been Lines can anybody seriously think he would have put in the shift required yesterday to bring us back at least a point? We're paying the penalty now for DC's summer signings which can only really be rectified in the summer if we're still in Div 1.

Great report Steve and pretty much as I saw it though maybe I would have given Sinclair another point for effort, but as you said a hard game to watch.

Exactly same as what I saw
First 45 was about as bad as I’ve seen this season
Glad to haul ass down the M6 with a point
Confident we won’t be relegated but our midfield needs major major surgery to last the course next season

Win Saturday and we’re stay up I can’t see the bottom four getting 7 points + they need to overtake us

DC's net budget was on par with the team around us when he left - i.e., it was negative. We've had a decent budget this year. Whether it's negative or positive is irrelevant to the quality you can bring in for a certain price. The fact is, we brought in players for decent money that have not produced. And we are spending at an annual loss.

Performances for a long time now have been one of the least important aspects of the 90mins. It’s all about the point or points, we can worry about seeing beautiful free flowing attacking football from August.
Staying in this division is priority #1, no matter how we do it. Give me 5 more ugly showings but taking the points to retain our league 1 status anytime.

Antonio Fargas, Most teams in this division are probably working at a financial loss on the budget. Our problem has been under both DC and latterly under GC a total lack of balance on players able to play in whatever formation we set up in and those who do play in certain positions look like a fish out of water compared to the opposition. Whatever people say about wingers and them not being really part of the current game I would say this is nonsence in this division and most teams we play have far more pace and strength out wide than us whether this be full back, wing back or out and out wingers. Then on to the midfield which overall I can only describe as pedestrian compared to most opponents.
Forgetting DC now because that is the past and IMO GC can only be considered on what he has done.IMO Positives- Brought in a striker who can score goals-this is a massive positive because without him we would now probably be down. Tightened us up at the back and for a spell when we had Holmes Dennis and Rodman available gave us the balance which DC s side lacked Pretty consistent team Selection Was straight with us and told us it would not be pretty and is certainly consistent with that!!
Negatives- Got rid of all the cover we had available out wide by loaning out Bennett and Matthews without getting any wide players in so0 with injuries we now appear to be back at square 1 The style we play is consistent home and away with the problems also being consistent. We don't create half as many chances as we did under DC and we only have one player who scores consistently.
That's it in a nutshell. We have little creativity, pace or width in the side and that makes it very difficult to predict if we will get enough points to stay up. I would say its 55-45 in favour of staying up at the moment. Lose Saturday and I reckon the odds go the other way- its that close! UTG

Being at the match it was clear to me the strategy was keep the goals out and try and nick something and we weren’t too far out on occasion.

But just saying 'please take note Wael' makes it look like you believe it had anything to do with him. He backs us decently, afaict, and I don't imagine he was telling DC during the summer, make sure our wide players don't perform next year and you get in a striker with a bad attitude, and I don't imagine he told GC in January, you can have JCH coz he's magic, as long as you dump all our width.

Gc has to take some responsibility tho I believe as it was clear we needed width at the close of jan and he opted to sign another central midfield player in ogogo

Would have been interesting to see Bakayoko given a red for what was an absolute leg breaker. Glad we spent the second half dislocating shoulders in an act of revenge.

Thanks for the write up Steve
The point about GC letting our wingers go. I feel like he's kept with the players who he would want in the trenches as you've said and considering were in a relegation scrap I'd say he's right.
The results he's got would suggest he's made the right call there.
