for defenders its not always about pace or height, Gary Mabutt not the tallest CH but played for England. Its more about positioning and anticipation, which applies to everyone on the pitch but especially defenders and attackers Always love throwing stuff like this into a debate but using a player who retired 21 years ago as an example. Good players are much better than tall players imo.

Exactly, I don’t know of anyone that would take Parkes over Lockyer for example. I suppose you’ve hit the jackpot when you find a tall defender with good technical attributes, there aren’t too many with that around at this level.

Sweeney MK1 & Locks was a good combination though, plus a tall CH is likely to score at the other end, I'd be a bit surprised if GC doesn't being in a 6'2"+ CH this summer.

If you've played football at any level -you know who's good in the air - not necessarily the tallest but strong, brave , a good leap and agility to get their head on it.

Peter Hartley’s a good example of this - just over 6ft but excellent in the air.

Tom Broadbent was a tall defender who was much better on the ground than he was in the air. Whereas Tony Craig is shorter but better in the air than on the ground. Height is largely irrelevant. Being good at what you're there to do is what matters. Tom Lockyer was good...he'll take some replacing IMO.

Broadbent? Oh wait a minute........... Broadbent who couldn't get a game at Swindon come the end of last season? Really? He was a god amongst men in his first 10 games, what happened?

Davies didn't strike me as being short for a centre back, he looked a unit!!

Like Bonham we only lost out on this signing because of Family home location.

In the good old days we could choose from a decent pool of Welsh/west country players and compete with da sh*t, Swansea and Cardiff.
Now that we're crap, we haven't a hope, so we have to cast the net wide.

Not to worried about not getting Edwards, Plymouth defence wasn't brilliant last season, where as Coventry where Davis was signed from had one of the best defences in league one, Little can play at cb if needed and we still have the up and coming Kilgour, need to sort goalkeeper wide midfielders and get goal poacher.
