Never saw him play but my old man always said John Charles was one of the best. Could play centre back or centre forward and was class at both.

And he is still revered in Italy as a great player in an era where Italian defenders were ruthless

I'm 1993 born so I can't comment on the Maradona's, Pele's (fraud), Eusebio's, Charlton's, Best's, Puskas', De Stefano's, van Basten's, etc. of the world. However, I fail to believe any of them even come close to Messi. And that includes Ronaldo (and I'm a United fan). Messi is the greatest goalscorer, mover, passer, game-controller, playmaker etc. I have ever seen with the greatest finishing ability, dribbling, low-gravity balance, vision etc. that I have ever seen. He is a phenom, a complete footballing god and a total anomaly. As far as I'm concerned, the best players in the world are Mbappe, Neymar, Sterling (genuinely, now), Salah, VVD, etc. Ronaldo is the best player from another planet and he's on the next level. Messi is from a different f**king universe. Maradona was incredible... skill and strength was immense. Had everything.. Almost single handed won world cups and league titles. By far the best for me There were some great midfielders around at that time: Hagi, Scifo, Mattheus, Valderrama, Socrates, Zico, Platini just off the top of my head, who were all a joy to watch. It was a golden age of world football. Maradona was on another level though, just as Messi and Ronaldo are now, and Pelé before him.

He said 'most' not 'all' ! Not all players were cloggers try Duncan Edwards. Roger Byrne. That's 2 more.there have always been cloggers even nowadays but there were also a lot of very good footballers try rovers for example Peter Sampson. Norman sykes. Josser watling harry Bamford the list is endress and bear in mind these players were using a leather football not a beach ball like today and invariably on mud heaps for pitches.let's see the current crop of genii play in those conditions and judge them then Regarding the leather ball, it contained an inflatable bladder and a lace to retain it. If you headed the ball against the lace, particularly in wet conditions, it was painful. As kids we played football on a daily basis at Kingsweston and I have been left wondering if that leather ball contributed to the 3 cerebral aneurysms I have experienced.

Never been proven but highly likely wonder how many of todays superstars would cope in those conditions with that ball

Be like 10 pin bowling it would skittle most modern players.Did you ever try taking a free kick or any other set piece on a cold really wet afternoon with the old leather football if you got it slightly wrong it felt like you had broken your foot

Reminds me of the story that alleges when ,i think it was Nat Lofthouse was playing center forward for England he asked either Tom Finny or Stanley Mathews to make sure that when they crossed the ball into the box make sure it was with Laces up!!

Ronaldo is a far better player than the one team wonder that is Messi. Lionel Messi scored his 51st goal of the season recently and secured the European Golden Shoe thanks to his 36 goals in the Spanish top-flight. He has made history by winning a record sixth golden shoe. Messi vs. Ronaldo: 2018-19 club statistics Messi for Barcelona: 51 goals, 19 assists, 50 matches 1.02 goal ratio Ronaldo for Juventus: 28 goals, 10 assists, 43 matches 0.65 goal ratio All-time career (club and country, but excluding club friendlies): Ronaldo: 686 goals and 218 assists in 960 appearances Messi: 668 goals and 271 assists in 816 appearances Career goal ratio: Ronaldo 0.71; Messi 0.82

Impossible to prove who is the best ever of course, but for me Messi is the best I have ever seen. Certainly a player who can excite a crowd far more than Ronaldo, who is also of course a brilliant player. Just feel blessed to have seen them both.

I wonder what he's going to do with that goat?
Are Argentinians the same as the Welsh when it comes to Bovidae?

I showed my son some highlights videos from YouTube from some of the all time best. We saw Pele, Stanley Matthews, Maradona, Cruyff, George Best, Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi. I know it’s far from a comprehensive list. When I started doing it I had in my head that Pele would come out best, and he nearly did, but even his best bits couldn’t top Messi’s for individual brilliance, in both my opinion and my son’s. Sheer genius. A world cup win may have settled any argument about the best ever but unfortunately Argentina have been a basket case for years.
