I was half listening to TalkSport today and there was a debate going on about teams changing their badge.
Naturally, City were at the forefront of this and they mentioned that the badge had been brought in to celebrate their 125 year anniversary, which makes their formation 1894. Now, forgetting all the 1982 stuff for a moment, when were they actually formed? I'm sure I remember them celebrating their centenary in 1997 under Scott Davidson (I think it was).
Genuine question...what year were they formed? How has it suddenly changed?
Mods - feel free to move this if you see fit.

They were not born as such, simply excreted.

1982 - how can they claim the history of another football club but not take any responsibility for that clubs debts. If they want the history how about Lansdown makes a real effort to find the creditors of the old club and pay the debts including a reasonable amount of interest. He could afford to surely ?

Thanks both. I'm much clearer now!
As I say, ignoring the 1982 stuff...how has their formation changed from 1897 to 1894? Has something previously unknown been discovered?

Thanks both. I'm much clearer now! As I say, ignoring the 1982 stuff...how has their formation changed from 1897 to 1894? Has something previously unknown been discovered? They were founded as Bristol South End in 1894 and changed their name to City and adopted professional status in 1897. The confusion arises as they've celebrated both anniversaries in the past and seem to change the date on their badge when it suits them. Though as every gashead knows, they were really formed in 82 as Bristol City 1982

Apparently Southville formed in 1887 and became Bedminster. Bristol South End formed in 1894 and then became Bristol City in 1897, and then Bristol City and Bedminster merged in 1900.

Thanks Axegas.

Apparently Southville formed in 1887 and became Bedminster. Bristol South End formed in 1894 and then became Bristol City in 1897, and then Bristol City and Bedminster merged in 1900. So Southville and Bedminster had a kid called Bristol South End. Then another called Bristol City, who then shagged his own mother. Some things never change that side of the river, Mother Hubbards.

Actually Bristol City 1982 Ltd ceased to be in 2012 when they became part of the Bristol Sport franchise so they are only 7 years old.

Pity the bloody luftwaffe didn't put an end to em in 1940,only good thing Hitler would have done. of course that would have meant we won’t have been able to play there in 1980 when Eastville Stadium was closed due to the fire
