Best one for me was Palace away on Boxing day around 75/76/77. Train broke down so we all arrived at half time quite worse for wear! A brilliant Steve White goal gave us the victory. It rained bricks on the way back to the station!

It rained bricks on the way back to the station! Think we got there just in time to see the goal - the only one to give us shock a 1-0 win. Norwood Junction was a tad hairy on the way back!

Only football special I went on was around 1988/89 to Bury. It was a drab 0-0 . A fleet of double decker buses met us at the station and ferried us to the ground. Remember on the way back when the train pulled into Birmingham a Wolves football special pulled in opposite. Let's just say there was some unpleasant banter between the two trains!!

The football specials,I remember them in the good old days! Think the supporters club arranged them(?) Remember going to Ipswich in a cup replay and a trip to Anfield(only time I've been there) where I had my camera nicked from the train when it was parked up in some siding while at the match.
The trains were old and shabby, and supporters club used to sell sandwiches, etc on board.
Would cost far too much now for train hire, even if the railway companies would do it,which I doubt.

During the mid 80’s, in my role with British Rail, I liaised with Steve Burns, in booking the charters for away games. Towards the end it was a nightmare to obtain enough rolling stock. i recall keeping my fingers crossed he didn’t come back for another 50 seats at times.

These football specials sound lovely. I never did travel on one, so I missed the cheerful sing songs and the afternoon tea on the way back. How jolly it all sounds.

Went to Arsenal for the Milk Cup. There was fighting on the train going up that they struggled to control. The train got damaged on the way back. I would imagine trips like that put pay to the football specials. .

One of those excursions made the front page of the Western Daily Press due to the amount of damage etc. As I had been on the train, my Dad obligingly took the WDP to work and "forgot" to bring it home, so that Mum couldn't be enlightened about what those trips were like.

Now we have a thread whose title is close to my heart! some of you will be aware that my user name stems from the name of this very thread, The football special. Wont bore you all again with to much detail but think 1963, third division relegation battle at Halifax town and the somewhat primitive surroundings of The Shay! Football special from Stapleton road, packed with Rovers fans making there presence known through every town on route, and we won 3-2 and survived In third division, great memories all the details on prev thread about user names, anyone else on board? this was pre hooligan days, would it work now, would love to think so but not sure. Great memory halifax. Special feeling I bet. I remember another football special in 1969/70 season. Me and a few were stood on Taunton station waiting for a train up to TM to see us. A football special full of Luton fans pulled into a platform one away from where we were standing. They were on their way to Torquay for an away match when Torquay were pretty strong. That season Rovers, Orient and Luton were fighting for only two promotion places in the pre play off and only two up days. They saw us and started to get out and shout at us. Seeing there were about 30-40 of them and about 3 of us we were glad they realised that being a platform away all they could do was shout at us! UTG!

The toilets were atrocious, p1ss everywhere. We just wouldn’t tolerate that nowadays.

The toilets were atrocious, p1ss everywhere. We just wouldn’t tolerate that nowadays. You actually had toilets? All that was left on the one we caught for the 1990 Wembley final was a few shards of porcelain and a hole in the floor where the toilet had once been. TBH the thing was wrecked before we even boarded it, I'm sure at that time they used the same carriages for all football specials and never bothered to repair them.

I remember going on the one they did for Norwich away (maybe about ten years ago now). I remember it being pretty popular that day but I don't think they've done one again since. There was one to Newport a couple of years back when we won 4-1(I think) in our promotion year. Don't think it was laid on by the club though.
