The song lends itself well to different styles and cover versions. Dr John and Andy Fairweather Low both performed worthwhile covers that were a step removed from the blues or 50s crooner standards that are prevalent. Injecting punk energy into the song won’t do it too much harm as long as it isn’t given the Toy Dolls type treatment.

Could be worse mind, "Glory Glory Man Utd" has to be the cheesiest anthem I've ever heard 😂 sounds like a pantomime! The Bates did a few really good punk covers of other songs, really dig them for that!

I used to have a rockabilly version by wild bob burgos that was good recorded in the 80s I think

I think it has amazing potential for a punk song. The lyrics are short and sharp, keep to an upbeat and shouty growl, and ending off with *I'd rather take morphine and die* seems pretty punk too!
Favourite punk cover for me (as an aside...) Has to be Johnny Was, SLF! Love that song, anecdote time... Watched them countless times with my Dad over the years, they never played it! 2017 Beautiful Days on their 40th tour Jake Burns was like "I can't sing in that key anymore, so we haven't played it for years, and it's only just dawned on us to drop the key around my voice...."
Needless to say, I was over the moon!

I quite like the rocky version of Blue Moon, that sort of adaption of Irene could be interesting.

Often wonder what the Stranglers might have made of Irene with a thumping JJB bass line and a Dave Greenfield keyboard interlude representing jumping in the river and drowning.

Quite like this version, not particularly punk though. For those who weren't aware, the band, big Tranmere fans, were inspired to cover this after hearing it sung when Tranmere beat us in that final. They're playing Bristol in March, I'll be there.
