Even through our good run I've struggled with this set up. We struggle to create- this isnt new. This occurred in better performances. However, now we cant justify the defender heavy approach as were not nearly keeping clean sheets.
Let's try to full backs:
Leahy and Rodman and get at teams. Yes- we might be open, but we might just score.

We need a fit right back, and we don't have one

If we didnt have a fit striker we still play one.
I wouldn't expect him to be a natural- but Rodman could fill in for a bit.

We need 2 decent CBs too.
Craig cant play in a back 4.
Davies and Kilgore maybe?

Even if we sort out the back 4, ML/TD/AK(TC)/THD, we then need an ACM to finally replace Lines, otherwise it's a CM of Ogogo and OC, I'm not sure Reilly is ever going to become a goal scorer so a new striker is also required. Plus a back up No 9 assuming Adeboyejo returns to Barnsley.

We are desperate for a fit right back. Rodman once again was absolutely woeful today.

Once we've shifted on a few players to make room in budget, we're in need of another right back option until end of season, a creative central midfielder with an eye for a pass, a centre back with a bit more pace and a striker or two. Maybe even decent GK cover until Anssi is back.

Anyone get the feeling we are in a Southampton cycle?
We come back from a brilliant result v Ipswich to propel us to highest position in league for many a year, then circumstances conspire to set a motion of decline.
And look what happened after Andy Williams hit that screamer winner in last min v Solton away? (Lallana in that team, as well as Neal Troutman!) We promptly went down and never recovered until we went out the league..
Sometimes it's so difficult to stop a sinking ship.

As I said before, in the past we didn't score many but we were keeping lots of clean sheets. Now with the same defence, we are conceding loads and not scoring any.
So why not change the formation? After bringing in two wingers, you cannot keep the 5-3-2 formation. Ginnelly looked good when he came on and has to start the next game. Play him as part of a 4-3-3 with him and one other supporting JCH. Yes we could still do with Ogogo to make that formation work but for now it should be Clarke, Upson and Sercombe in the middle. Right back is a problem so should try and get one in on loan.

Our full backs /wing backs are the problem not getting close to the man they are marking ,four out of five of our recent goals have come from crosses what happened to man for man marking this does not exist any more, its all fancy systems and does not seem to be used nowadays. Poor defending..In the old days a player followed their best forwards and marked them out of the game.ie vinnie jones, frankie prince, gerry gow[sorry] ,billy bremner ,nobby stiles plus full backs.etc etc all did a job on there player.we seem to give forwards far too much space.

We need 2 decent CBs too. Craig cant play in a back 4. Davies and Kilgore maybe? You're right about Craig. A totally different player in a 5-3-2. A flat backline makes him look ready for a zimmer frame. I fear this transition is going to be more painful to watch as the season progresses, a bit like Clarke's incessant tinkering during the first half of his seasons here, but as the end justified the means in two of them we've conveniently forgotten how tedious it all was when it magically got going by Christmas. in modern football you need to be able to switch between one formation and another when called for on the pitch. If you play one way all the time you eventually get found out, like Ollie at Blackpool and like Sheff Utd will if Wilder persists in playing his 5-3-2 with a forward line as dud as ours for the level they're at. So far we've brought in two young wingers and a creative midfielder so it looks like Garner is filling his squad with more formation options. It will take time though and those 14 points could prove invaluable come May.

Problem with the loan system now is an RB will be here for half a season but in a week or two Little could be back, Hare back eventually this spring and we've still Rodman. Plus it was Leahy at fault yesterday anyway for the killer goals. Sheff Utd aren't doing too bad playing 5 at the back, perhaps it's the way we're are playing, not the formation?

Probably. We're not playing it with enough press and energy since Coughlan up and left.

We're not playing it with enough press and energy since Coughlan up and left. I think Coughlin used to kick their arses and be blunt with them. I liked the play well and keep the shirt attitude. Maybe it's all gone a bit mamby pamby in the dressing room

So about 5 or 6. Is that all ? Yes. That is all. Unless Ogogo is quickly back from what sounds like a serious problem, I would also add a defensive midfielder to that list as a priority.
