You lost your bet. I notice you still haven't answered. "The Dubliner implied during his remarkable post-match press conference at Portman Road that a lack of financial resources and a feeling he has taken the club as far as he can go have made him question is future." "Coughlan met with club president Wael Al-Qadi in Bristol earlier this month, a day after the penalty shootout win over Leyton Orient in the EFL Trophy, where the January transfer window was a main topic of conversation." So I guess in your view it was just pure chance Mansfield offered GC a job and it was nothing to do with him apparently being unhappy after what ever was discussed in that meeting about this month's transfer window, after which it seems he questioned his future? If you're going to make up "quotes" you really shouldn't include your own signature spelling mistakes.

So I guess in your view it was just pure chance Mansfield offered GC a job and it was nothing to do with him apparently being unhappy after what ever was discussed in that meeting about this month's transfer window, after which it seems he questioned his future? Topper the word implied doesn't mean that that is what it is.... it's what someone else has perceived was behind it rather factual ..... read talking transfer window - again noone actually knows what was discussed and people are just putting 2 and 2 together and coming up with whatever answer suits them. Fwiw I have no real idea on why Coughlan left but I think it maybe could have been feeling unappreciated by the fans (he referenced this a few times in interviews) , he had spent 10 plus years away from his family which as a player is softened by the breaks and when you're not playing you can relatively switch off whereas as a manager you are constantly working so even when he was with his family he was still working and most of the time he was living away ..... he probably a moment when he realised he was missing out on his kids growing up and you never get that time back.... (as a coach you still get the breaks and time to spend with family), he was probably feeling drained from it all and after a year the posSible internal club politics may have impacted him I don't know and the lack of training capabilities etc may have started to grate.... Why mansfield? He may have asked his agent to sound out opportunities closer to home with a view of moving on in the summer but then when Mansfield were aware, they made their move and forced an issue with Coughlan thinking if I don't do this now I may be having to be unhappy personally of out of work in the summer.... hence he then called the board out but making things public and adding excuses to minimise the negativity towards him.... I really don't know - this is all hypothetical guess work and no one knows the reasons other than GC and the chairman/CEO.....

By the way I do think garner will be a success in the long term but have no real foundation to base that on apart from gut feeling and what other respected managers and coaches and players have said...

I'm pleasantly surprised to see the level of belief that we have, 55% (60/109) believing he'll be a success; 85% (93/109) believing he'll do well enough to still be here at the start of next season.
Only 11%, 1 in 10, (12/109) thinking he'll be gone in the next couple of months is a lot less that I expected. And not even rising to 15% (16/109) by the end of the season.
There's a lot more positivity and belief on here than I realised!

I voted that he will be with us next season, but that's because I think Wael will stick with his decision to appoint him and give him the chance to build something up.
It's been suggested that votes like mine are a show of support for BG. It doesn't mean I support him. It just means I think he'll still be here.
I don't know what to make of him, to be honest. Everything has gone wrong for him, personally and professionally, and he must be feeling pretty low.
I do think January is ludicrously early to be talking about sacking him though.

Unless he has lost the confidence of the owners and/or the dressing room, then I tbink he should have a full season to show what he can do.
I would caveat that, though, by saying if we are doing really badly by November/December then things would have to change.

Fair enough, I appreciate that not every vote directly correlates to positivity about Garner and I appreciate that it reflects our view of Wael's likely action. However there's going to have to be a significant upturn for him to keep his job. The thing that most surprises me is that over half of us are of the view that Ben Garner's Bristol Rovers career will be classed as a success.

I think Garner will be sacked 2-3 months into next season.
I honestly think if he stays this season and was to have a full season next year then we could be A league two side again for 21/22. I just really think he is out of his depth managing us. DC and GC said it how it is but I already feel like BG is making excuses and trying to cover up how bad we have been. "we could have had 6 points in last 2 games". He seems robotic to me and as though he talking from a football coaching manual he has read his whole life. I imagine him to b a good coach but doesn't have the charisma or presence to be a manager.

Well his departure was clearly more complicated than randomly being tapped up by a lower league club right in his favourite part of the country, which happily and amazingly coincided with his wish to move back there right then. It just doesn't happen like that. It would be like Wael noticing that Slaven Bilić is doing rather well at West Brom and deciding to take a punt on offering him a job at the Mem. So you have to ask if GC instigated the move, perhaps via his agent. And then you have to ask why, since we were riding high in the league, he hadn't been in the job very long, and he was reportedly happy with the stadium and other facilities? Was it suggested to him that he should move on if he couldn't arrest the decline in attendances? Had he become unhappy with his budget? Or the lack of any progress behind the scenes? Had he fallen out with the board or other senior people? Something fishy was going on. The official explanation for his departure is so unlikely as to be a bit ludicrous. So, yes, I would say his departure was very clearly linked to his relationship with the board. I don't know the exact reasons, of course, but I'm not totally gullible. What's the betting LJG doesn't reply to that well worded post? GC's outbursts at the Blue Diamond lunch and post Ipswich match, just fall in deaf ears to the gullible. So there's the latest Gaschat Fact then. Gasincider says something on here that has not been backed up by anyone and in fact has been refuted by someone on the other forum. But it's been said enough times so it is now a fact.

Actually, with a reasonable run of fortune we could have got those 6 points: Penalty miss in last few minutes v Fleetwood. Any fair run of the ball in their six yard box would have given us 2 first half goals at Bolton. Even the Bolton fans were astonished those incidents didn't result in goals for us. i do think Garner is "work in progress" but let's be patient. An extra 4 points from the last two games would have placed a different perspective on things.

What I loved about DC is he would always say it how it is and not try and cover up bad performances. BG has already done this several times and now we have fans accepting this also. He might be a work in progress but we aren't going to get anywhere by covering over poor peformances, and failing to see things for what they are.

If this form continues, I can see him getting another transfer window but if we were to start next season with this form continuing he will have to go. I’d give him until September.

Yeah, I mean, if we had got that all important third goal like BG said then we’d have been home and dry (it finished 1-1). It’s a worrying sign of him clutching at straws.

In theory there is nothing wrong with that....as long as the next guy through the door has a philosophy suited to those players. I hope if anything is learnt by the board from this it’s that you have to, chiefly, play to your players strengths and that is what you should look for in a manager. Especially with an appointment after the start of a season.

How long has Garner got? Since he arrived our record has been shocking: P10 W0 D4 L6 F4 A17 19/20 prior to his appointment: P30 W15 D9 L6 F42 A32 The next two games - Coventry and Wycombe - look like two more losses to me. I really hope I'm wrong and he turns it around, no doubt this thread will be flagged if he does, but I can't see him being here by the end of March, we have some really tough fixtures then. I'm sure some people won't appreciate this post but I genuinely wonder what we think, do you still believe in his appointment or do we think it's doomed? I mean no disrespect to you here. I know you are genuinely interested in seeing what others feel but like you said in your last sentence that you know some won't like this thread, personally, I am one of them.
He's only had 10 games and technically some of that was Maher in charge while BG was on leave. And only 7 are league games. Talking about how much time BG got left this early to me is just completely wrong. 10 games in 34 days and out of those 34 days BG wasn't even at the club for 10 of those days as he was on leave of course. Complete madness already talking about how long he has left.
I would be extremely disappointed if the club sacks him this season. However, I don't believe for a second the club will sack him. They have supported him through his personal difficulties. They appreciate he wants to do things his way and is building the squad to his vision. They have supported him so far financially with bringing in new signings that he wants. I am sure they know (along with a lot of fans) that all these changes will take time. I can't see the club wasting this time and money this soon by sacking BG.

Reading some of the replies on this thread have me in disbelief. I respect others opinions and I know we all want the best for our club but we all have different beliefs what way is the best. I just feel some people have seen us 4th in the table at one stage and believe we now have some God given right to still be around that position for the rest of the season and therefore refuse to try to understand the circumstances why we have fallen down the table so far and instead just want to blame somebody. Reaching 4th and just beat Ipswich had increased expectations. But we were playing poor football but getting results. The way we were playing had many moaning and had people staying away. But it was working. We had a small squad due to injuries and the team was working hard, especially the defence and Jaakkola. But then we were about to enter that part of the season where the schedule was packed - adding cup and replays into the mix. If you think about it, the squad that was available was always going to struggle at the xmas / new year stage with fatigue as playing so many game already due to a small squad and so many game coming thick fast would eventually catch up with the squad. I don't feel many have taken this into consideration. I also don't feel many have took into consideration that when BG joined us, he was the 4th manager in 4 straight games. That would obviously have a negative impact on the players mentally. BG even said when he joined that it wasn't an ideal time for him as games are coming thick and fast so no time on the training pitch and due to injuries there are a lot of tired players that he has to keep using. So no one should be surprised really of the sudden turn of our form. Yet some already were calling for BG's head after just 3 games!
I also don't feel many have took into consideration that BG was struggling with the health issues at home, so he was stretched but was so determined he remained with the club before being sent on leave away from the club. Hindsight, he probably should have been sent on leave earlier. It was all bad timing for him and the club. How were the players feeling? Still fatigued and without the new manager present and BG admitted he hadn't yet had the chance to sit and chat to the players about their futures. The players confidence all of a sudden at an all time low. Since BG returned, people should have given him a fresh start and then understand there will be new recruits who will need time to gel. Injured players will return but will need time to reach their best. BG will need to fix the confidence of the players. I would hope as an experienced coach, this should come natural to him. Unfortunately, a lot of fans don't seem to want to understand this nor give him the time to do any of this. And now he has a bigger squad available, he is now at the point where he is in my opinion trying to work out what is the best formation and starting 11. As a result, there has been improvements. Small but there is progression and something to build on. Yet BG still hasn't actually had a full week on the training pitch with the players to get his idea's across and that of course effects the time needed to get going under BG. But this too hasn't been taken into consideration by fans. I am disappointed that a lot of fans don't understand the difficult start BG has had. Any manager would have struggled under the exact same circumstances. And what doesn't help it the toxic atmosphere at games. Instead of encouraging the manager and players, you know, be the 12th man that we once were, some throw abuse which just builds tensions in a negative way. Give BG a break and time. Season is not over. We are still in reaching distance of the top 6. I wonder how many of you would have taken at the start of the season that with 19 games to go that we would be just 7 points away from 6th. I doubt there would be many.
