Its Duke on Duke! Jack spoke with former Gas striker Nathan "The Duke" Ellington, as they looked back on his career and time at the club. Coming to Rovers from non-league Nathan made a huge impact at Rovers. Playing alongside Gas greats such as Cureton and Roberts he talks about how much he learned from all the players he played along side. A trait he continued throughout his career as he went up the leagues. He is most remembered for scoring a hat-trick against Derby in a 3-1 win in 2002. This was the first time a team from the Third Division had beaten a Premier League team in the FA Cup. He was named PFA Division Three team of the year for 2001–02. He talks about his life after Rovers, moving on to eventually play in the Premier League. He talks about his spells at Wigan and how difficult it can be for a player in contract negotiations. They also talk about his conversion to Islam in 2005. How team mates treated him differently and requests to shave off his beard. In 2011, he set up the Association of Muslim Footballers, whose purpose is to provide a network for Muslim players and families, highlighting the positive Muslim role models within the professional game and working to improve relationships between players of other beliefs. listen.gascastpodcast.co.uk/276671/4039472-a-chat-with-nathan-ellington

He joined Christ's School in Year 9, I know that because I was Head of Year 9, and in charge of recruitment. It was just before Christmas and we didn't want to take anyone in but his cousin Lisa (with a broad Bradford accent!) would knock on my door everyday, sometimes twice a day asking if he could come to the school. Jason Roberts, Jodie Morris and Clinton Morrison, or Chambers as he was then were all in Year 10, and I taught them all the previous year. When Rovers first played him against York and he scored his first goal I was in the East Stand when the ball hit the net his mother, who I knew came down and almost smothered me saying "if you hadn't of taken him in this wouldn't have happened. He was Surrey Under 16 High Jump champion in his first summer with us. Academically he was lazy, but he was a nice kid

I really enjoyed this pod.
Fascinating to listen to how he learned different skills from different players and coaches. The story about Penrice teaching him HOW to do better rather than just telling him to do things better was interesting too. It was clear Penny was a massive part in his development at Rovers.
His move to Wigan was amusing - jumping into a helicopter in London and being flown to Wigan to sign on deadline day.. when he had no idea where Wigan was (geographically - or in the league)… great to hear about linking back up with Jason Roberts and the stories about comparing wages!
Really felt for Nathan when he spoke about the contract situation at Wigan and subsequent move to West Brom. Every bit of his story was truly fascinating - including his conversion to Islam and challenges that brought with it.
I was curious to know whether there was ever any potential prospect of him returning to Rovers as he went back down the leagues - as that question was asked of Cureton on one of the earlier pods and that was very interesting to hear how close he was to returning. We always get linked with former players when they become available, so it is always good to learn if there was ever the slightest bit of truth to those stories.
Cheers Duke(s).. this kept me entertained for almost 2hrs of lockdown 2020 - keep the content coming!

I also hoped he'd return. After west brom, he seemed to just fizzle out, going abroad to Greece and then just retired.. Very young from memory, certainly not much older than about 32. Maybe he had an injury that cut his career short like lambert? I also remember that first goal against York.. Nearly broke the net from what I remember
