Yep, that's the sort of reason I chose to post what I did, in this thread. Part of the reason Wael became unpopular was that a lot of people over-egged his arrival, despite his evolution not revolution thing. So, hopefully we've learned our lesson a bit. We’ve taken a big step forward no doubt, but we are still very much in City’s shadow and will continue to be unless someone with Lansdown’s wealth buys in to the club. Talk of catching City is still extremely premature. It can be done. Brentfords owner Matthew Benhams estimated wealth is smaller than Waels, yet they have been punching above their weight in the upper echelons of The Championship for a few years now, in a ground that isn't that much better than The Mem really and also of similar capacity. They're moving into their brand spanking new stadium whenever next season starts. I would say they are the benchmark.

Well!!
There is no doubt that this outstanding news for us. It would seem that the family politics were holding Wael back and he is now in the driving seat. Huge kudos to him for clearing the main debts; that's a vast commitment. Hopefully Mrs Wael isn't giving him earache about it.
Re-reading the statement a couple of times it seems very clear that the trade-off is that we'll be going down the line of youth, non-league bargains and running a tight ship for the foreseeable. Wael's learned the hard way that running many-a football club is like shovelling your money into a steam train's furnace - vast amounts need to continually go in just to keep the thing moving.
This means that as supporters we will need to get fully behind the younger players, and not rip them apart if they have a couple of bad games or a run of mediocre ones. We'll have to learn to be more patient and understanding - Wael's made sure we will have a financially healthy club to support, and we won't be going the way of Bury, Macclesfield etc. But we need to keep our end of the bargain and keep expectations grounded. Until a new stadium is on its way, we are still treading water in the third tier. None of this 'mind the gap' rubbish...

Seems not everyone is quite so thrilled with this news as are the vast majority of us. On the 'what happens next thread' a few suspects refuse to accept the news for what it is and are looking for ways to find fault with what's undoubtedly a good news story for the club and us fans. These suspects have trumped the 'Wael wants out and the clubs for sale 'theories and Wael does not care , and they do not like it when Wael refuses to confirm or deny there rumours and then what happens? Well you know that scene in Indiana Jones where this 10 foot Arab waves this 10 foot sabre around at Jones? Indiana looks at him ,listens to his rantings, then calmly gets a pistol out and shoots him! Absolute classic! for the Arab read the doubters ,for Indiana read Wael!

Do you seriously think Wael's going to spend £18m writing off debts, lose £2m cancelling the interest payments and probably spend another £2m on the new training ground to then just to sit watch the cr@p served up over the last couple of seasons again next season? I expect BG/TW have been told they need to put together a competitive squad, one which plays attractive football whilst also unearthing a few gems we can sell on. Although that could well be the way the whole of lower league football will have to head post CV19.

With the covid virus effecting clubs finances does this now mean we are the only club in the league not in the red, not that I will be feeling sorry for our poorer neighbours but it is a nice feeling that unlike most other clubs at the moment we have no financial worries. When I spoke to TG he said it was the clubs aim to balance the books if that is the case then I don't think we seeing any spending spree but we are in a good position compared to other clubs and with so many players out of contract hopefully the club can bring a few decent players in on reasonable contracts.

There's no doubt Wael has been on a steep learning curve these last 4 years. I hope he's learned just how expensive, ruinous even it can be runnng. Football club. He only has to look 3 miles over the river to see that. One assumes he has nowhere near the money that Lansdown has, so the hope has to be that through his banking and Middle East connections he will be able to raise the huge sums of money needed to build a stadium and run the club day to day. Because if we are successful, wages like Bennetts 4K per week that has so exercised us will seem like chicken feed. After all, It cost to the sh** 13k per week to learn that the Snake wasn't up to Champioship standard. And finally, I hope Wael has learned that it is wise to maintain a respectful distance from the fans. We're not your friends, you can't tell us the inner workings and finances of the club over a beer, and for that reason alone you have to maintain a distance. When you first came to us you tried to be one of the lads. I was amazed to see you sitting with us at away games, and even travelling with us on the train. All very well when times were good, but when problems started you were nowhere to be seen. This led to suspicions that you didn't know what you were doing, had no money, had no control, etc etc. Your job as an owner isn't a popularity contest and sensible supporters realise this. What we want is someone who we can trust has the best intentions for the club, keeps us informed, but maintains a little distance whilst projecting energy and power. You can never be an ordinary supporter. You are right Oldie, when you are the boss you can't be one of the boys , its a very difficult balancing act to get right but i think supporters were guilty of creating the 'he's one of us ' myth by the Gloucester road celebration ,all good fun at the time which Wael prob had no choice but to go along with, Wael never promised anything, fans just assumed that because of his origin money was no object and refused to hear the word 'evolution' when they wanted revolution!

Just a quick point, i wish Gas eds would stop worrying about catching up with our neighbours, they have there culture we have ours and they are vastly different, this is not about keeping up with them its about us and our future nowt to do with them and incidentally as a business there day to day balance sheet is ,like a lot of championship clubs, a basket case!

You can never be an ordinary supporter. Nowhere to be seen? Not true! I have seen him so many times in the last season! I spent 15 minutes talking to him at the Leyton Orient Cheap Cup game at home; I think this was the day he knew that GC was on the verge of leaving. He always has time to say hello! Maybe he was practising social distancing in times of trouble and with a view to the virus coming? Give him credit; how many players and managers do ordinary fans get a chance to see amongst their midst let alone talk to? And he is an owner! Yalla Wael! UTG

I'd be more than happy to see a team of local youngsters in the blue and white quarters for the next couple of seasons.. The right infrastructure in terms of stadium, training ground and academy is FAR more important than the players on the pitch.. Who says we have to tread water?? Be patient, yes, but just because we've got youngsters, it doesn't mean they're doomed to failure.. Due to the financial implications of the lockdown, I think most if not all clubs at our level will be forced to do the same thing re relying on young academy graduates and someone has to go up!! Just depends on who has the best youngsters. I recall the last time we had a squad of lots of local graduates from the youth team in 1995 and we nearly went up to the championship, losing to Huddersfield with ex youth teamers like higgs, gurney, maddison, white, French, Tovey, browning, archer, Hayfield, Paul and Stewart. I think a lot of journeyman pros over the age of 30 will have to find alternative employment at the end of this season or dramatically reduce their wage demands. I'd rather watch a team of kilgour, mennayesse, hargreaves, walker, hoole, hulbert, tomlinson and russe than us signing more injury prone journeymen like brett pitman who would be a waste of an expensive wage to go with little, THD, Davies, Rodman and Upson. Players like that, post lockdown will be a thing of the past I reckon, unless as stated, they dramatically reduce their wage demands or clubs get a bit street wise and give them short term 'pay as you play' contracts.

It doesn’t need to be one or the other. There is a pretty big gap between a squad of local youngsters and a squad of old, overpaid, injured journeymen!

Pick a game from tomorrow's fixtures, any game, and put a bet on a 3-1 scoreline. You know you want to. It'll complete your week if it comes in. Okay, obvious Blackburn 3 Shitscum 1 It’s on Marshy, it’s on....!

So the advantage of being financially better off than them is important.
