Nothing in 2011 was more eventful than the goings on at the Memorial Stadium that year, where following relegation to L2 the season before, Paul Buckle left Torquay United to take the reigns at Bristol Rovers - who were expected to take the fourth tier by storm and bounce straight back up. Join Ollie, Caz & Max as they reminisce on what was one of the most eventful, memorable & chaotic seasons in recent memory at the Gas (if not the most successful!) Grab a cider, sit back & strap yourself in for a bumpy ride... #UTG listen.gascastpodcast.co.uk/276671/4516001-time-machine-2011-12-season-we-want-buckle-out

Just listened and enjoyed a look back in time. I’d forgotten what an objectionable man Buckle was. I’d also forgotten the ‘Buckle Excuse’ songs the Blackthorn used to sing to him. The balls too round
The grass is too green
The lights are too bright etc etc.
When he got fired and went to Luton I remember him saying in interview words to the effect “ I’ve reviewed my time at Rovers to see if I made any mistakes and If I should do anything differently. I’ve concluded that I did nothing wrong and intend to manage at Luton in exactly the same way”
Talk about having no self-awareness! It went really well at Luton. He failed to take them up and I believe he ended up getting fired.
He was an odious, orange, hair gelled horrible little man.

Very polite about it to, what’s he doing these days? Must be struggling with solariums being closed.

North of NY so probably still on the sunbeds

I liked him.
He should have had more support from the Board.
Went the way of Penny with players ruling the dressing room.

The Buckle era was just... bizarre. Never have I despised someone so much who I wanted to join us so badly lol

Looking back he did actually sign a few players who have turned out to have some very good careers.
Browner is a Rovers legend now. Carayol and Smith went on to bigger and better things. Tom parkes part of the back to back promotion squad. Norburn tipped for championship football next season.
Signing as many players as he did and expecting them to gel straight away was always going to be a big ask. But yes he was a shocking manager!
