Why is the shop at the Mem still closed?
I've had enough of places not opening or reducing opening hours because of Covid.
Open the bar and shop on the weekend and stop using it as an excuse to lay people off. People might want to support the business more in these times. Why can't the bar show re-runs of old games on a weekend afternoon?
Why not stick 2 people behind the bar and see what happens on a Saturday. Plenty of space so can control it well.
Shops should be open for longer to 'flatten the curve of customers'. Ironically though, it doesn't seem to bother them if they can go home at 3pm each day. (Last bit non-Rovers rant).

If you believe it would even be worth opening the Mem bars (paying bar staff/kitchen staff/door staff and their managers or supervisors) during a period where there is absolutely no football happening at all in this country, then you are living in a dream world.
Even more so if you think people would actually turn up.

Not saying food is a realistic option but why not make the most of an asset that is sat there rent free and open it up for the weekends at least? My local card shop is open and I can buy dog ice cream from another so why can't the club shop open for the weekend? Hardly a 'dream world' is it?

I don't actually know but I would guess the club are selling goods online (?) . I do not know how busy the club bars get out of season but as a pure guess I suspect they get most of their income on matchday. Covid is frustrating but it's best not to take it out on the club . If they thought it would be profitable and safe they would do it. Its s business after all.

I suspect it would be worth doing 2 or 3 days a week for season tickets and shirts. I’d be tempted to buy a shirt from the shop to save on £6 delivery and to get out of the house
More importantly though the club needs to feel it can operate under social distancing and I can see why that might be a problem with the store layout.

I expect the club are making use of the furlough scheme still for its non-footballing staff and if you take them off furlough, not only do you have the expense of paying staff again, the fixed costs from opening the bar and shop rise when you're likely to get less footfall because of Covid anyway. It's probably not worth it from a financial standpoint at the moment.

TG isn’t daft when it comes to commercial opportunity and I’m sure he would have looked at this already.
If you say you need 3 staff to run a bar and 2 to run the shop and you are paying them minimum wage for an 8 hour shift that’s roughly £300 in wages add to that light, electric and running costs I bet it stands in at £500. .
How much would we have to turnover to cover the cost and more importantly turn a profit?
I don’t know what the margins are in a pint of beer and a shirt these days but I would guess you would have to take £3000 through the tills to cover off the costs.
That’s quite a bit when there is no football or sport to watch and you’re relying on local foot fall to pop in.

Ridiculous thread. A wishy washy post with no facts or figures to back it up.
As for places being fully booked this week, well of course they are with the government eat out offer. Unless we're planning on serving 3 course meals in the club shop then I can't see your point.
It's all well and good wanting to keep people in work but at the end of the day, these companies are businesses not charities.

I think the OP has a good point with regards to the shop. With a demand for face coverings, new shirts, new training kits etc, I think we may have missed a trick here.
The bar idea however, is, in my opinion, a non starter. Every pub I've been in on Saturdays since being allowed out, has been either very quiet, or completely empty. Having just spent 5 days in London, I was amazed at how quiet it is. Train empty, tubes empty, tube stations eerily quiet, loads of shops, coffee shops, pubs, wine bars, clubs, all still shut. I don't think anyone in their right mind is going to travel from other parts of Bristol to go in our club house.

The costs of stocking the bars for a likely chance that nobody is going to turn up makes it a non-starter, add the costs of staffing and lighting etc. Not sure if the op is on a wind up?

Seems very Gaschat to moan about the shop not being open during a global pandemic.

I don’t think anybody is moaning about it being closed, just suggesting we could make more money if it was open. We can’t all stay in a little protective bubble forever. Lockdown has eased, get over it.
Yes, I’ve become aware of the concept of online shopping, but I don’t think ours are products that lend themselves to being sold this way. I’ve never been in the shop without picking up about half a dozen things, most of which I hadn’t gone in for. Can’t really do that online, perhaps due to the website not being good enough.

Surely that would be more reason to buy more things as then the delivery charge doesn't seem as much.

Yet I still can’t imagine a single person, even your most ardent Gashead who lives locally, texting a friend with a “fancy nipping down the Mem for a pint”. It just wouldn’t happen.
