That was in the days when the FA Cup was a great tournament. That was the season we eventually drew Arsenal at home, 35,000 at Eastville! The match was a non event, as we didn’t lay a glove on them and lost 3-0. A bit like that League cup match against Stoke City in 1971? I think it was 3-0 at half time. Terry Conroy d stroked us that game. Too strong and fast for our defenders. I remember some big time 1st division Stoke fans arriving in a mini van giving it large because they thought Bristol was a little town full of southern softies. When I saw the van limping away at the end It didn't seem to have a panel that wasn't kicked in.

Arsenal weren’t the sophisticated side they eventually became in the Wenger days, but several of the side that played in the Double winning side a couple of years later were in the team. I can remember Frank McLintock, Ian Ure and George Graham playing, and I think Graham scored, Larry Taylor was in goal for Rovers, and kept the score down,we thought we had a really top keeper on our hands. The other thing I remember was there were a handful of Arsenal fans in the Tote End behind me, not causing any problems, but a bit mouthy. I had assumed all Arsenal fans were stockbrokers or architects, but this bunch definitely weren’t! Rovers were dependent on Harold Jarman and Alfie Biggs in those days, but they were both shut out of the game. We had a better team, by the time we played against Stoke, and we fancied our chances before the game. I can remember they had such good one touch players, with so many options on the ball. I didn’t realise what a good player George Eastham was, all left foot, and never giving the ball away. I think Stoke won the League Cup that year, in the days when everyone played their first choice side, and they were a top outfit, no question.

Red and white kit..... WYHIB ? I actually quite like red and white stripes with black shorts, but, for Rovers, no thanks. Wouldn't mind seeing us go back to one of our early home kits, sky and white hoops or black and white stripes, we'd need a third kit then. www.historicalkits.co.uk/Bristol_Rovers/Bristol_Rovers.htmDoes anyone have a record of change kits that predates 1980? This is the best record of away kits I've found footballshirthistory.weebly.com/a-b/bristol-rovers#I have very little idea of what Rovers wore as a change strip prior to this. Of course back in the day the change kit was only worn when necessary. I remember that in the 1960's & 70's Man City wore red and black striped away kit with black shorts. Having away colours the same as your cross-city rivals didn't seem to matter then.

I wonder who decided on the red & white kit - was it an off the peg standard Southampton style kit?
It's the only away kit I remember from the 60s/70s until the white shirts/black shorts and yellow kits appeared in the 80's.

I saw Smash and Grab and the rest of the team wear red and white stripes away at Blackbun I was there too! We won 2-0 then off to see the lights at Blackpool. On the way back down to Bristol the supporters club coach broke down 60 miles north of Birmingham, we all got out and walked up the hard shouder to a service station that was close by where Oscar helped himself to the self service food on offer. We waited for a replacement coach to come up from Bristol but it seemed to take forever so we all walked back up the hard shoulder and got back on the coach. The replacement arrived about 4.00 in the morning and I remember getting back home to bed at about 07.30 Sunday morning, absolutely shattered. But still unbeaten and still top of the league so totally worth it!

Don't you think modern kits are over-egged somewhat? Where's the classic kits of eg 1960s Plymouth Argyle and Crystal Palace? And that photo of Frankie Prince, Mike Green and Colin Dobson in Rovers' quarters return season 1973-74. "Fashion comes and goes. Style lasts forever." It's all just a bit over-cooked these days. The simplicity of the kits really sits easily on the eye.

That is some executive box! More like a player / prayer box? If losing at 1/2 time, players have a quick 5 minute pray. UTG

I have always sat in the never red camp, however, as we have taken the Gas insult and turned it into a positive affirmation I am no longer sure whether I would be horrified if we had a red away kit.
As long as we had blue and white quarters for the home kit I reckon a red away kit would be *ing novel. Wouldn't be many shirt sales mind.............

The one I really don't get is those who are against red numbers. We had them when I started watching games in the late 70s and have had them a few times since (2014 'Eurocams' possibly the last time?). Always thought they looked good and stood out a lot better than black, for example.

I would much prefer a blue and white quartered back with red numbers/letters over a plain blue back with white numbers, to me that would make the kit more smart whilst still having the numbers on the back stand out. Wouldn’t want anymore red than that on a Rovers kit though.

So, if I'm piecing this all together correctly we were wearing the red/white striped away kit in 66/67 (eg Oxford City, Shrewsbury), 70/71 (eg Reading), 73/74 (eg Blackburn). That's verging on aound ten seasons, there must be more photos out there! In the late seventies, as early as 77/78 (possibly earlier?) we had a couple of different yellow Bukta shirts, and then the famous green and black quarters shirts came in, and then the Football Shirt History website picks up the story from there: footballshirthistory.weebly.com/a-b/bristol-rovers#Are there any other Rovers away/special shirts people remember from pre-1980 or is that our lot? (Of course there must have been something prior to the red/white stripes unless that goes back to 1883!) Would love to hear any more info people may have. Thanks in advance, UTG. [Edit. 1973/74 Brighton 2-8 Bristol Rovers - we were wearing yellow shirts with black shorts and socks - how does that square with peoples' memories?]

I think red and white was our 3rd kit. We only wore it if the kit man couldnt get the second kit washed and ironed on time!
