Hi all,
Been a secret reader for years but due to football management commitments haven’t watched as much as I’d like of the gas. However took a 2 year break and watched back to back promotions. Taken my second break from management. So hopefully 3 in a row.
So I’m definitely in the rose tinter brigade. Seeing the progression of the 3-4-3 from what I felt was quite negative 5 games ago but now looks more like the Sheff united championship promotion 3-4-3. Started thinking we’ve got a chance to go up after the Cardiff game.
However reality has hit today, are we really in front of Oxford, Peterborough, Wigan, Hull, Charlton, Ipswich, Sunderland and fleetwood (with their signings).
Just think if we hover around the last play off place we will have done really well. Just think some people’s expectations (mine included) could be a bit too high.

Sensible post you will probably be banned! think we are in for exciting season just a shame that what looks like our best 'footballing' side for a while are going to play to a tiny audience, expect a few setbacks on the way to a challenging top 10 finish. up the Rovers!

Wycombe got promoted and I think we have a better squad than they had, albeit this year is tougher, a quality striker and I would be very happy.

I think our chances rely heavily on what we do in the market over the next couple of weeks or so. We have effectively lost 20 goals a season with be sale of JCH and looking at the current squad there is a serious lack of proven goalscoring talent. I think i calculated about 50 goals in total that our squad have scored at league one level or above and a fair few of those came from Ehmer. I truly believe that signing a striker could be the difference of about 10-15 places in this league. It will be interesting to see how things pan out. Garner’s record in this league is at best atrocious but that was working with a squad of someone else’s players. There can be no hiding place for Garner now.

There are lots of promising signs, but we need to address two things to stand a chance in my opinion: 1. I can't see us getting enough goals to mount a challenge without a really decent goalscorer. The top teams in this division tend to score around 80+ goals a season and I can't see that within the current squad. 2. I need convincing that we are not going to be undone by sides playing a high press against us. We've added quality ball players at the back and in midfield, but we need a plan B against a high press, which many teams will employ.

Not sure any of us have a clue what we'll do this season, whilst we seem to have had a good pre-season we've now lost JCH/20 goals a season striker, and it's anybody's guess if BG can actually manager at this level.

Bookies seem to have us around the same sort of odds to go down as to go up, which I'd probably have to agree with whilst we remain without a recognised goalscorer and registering only 2 wins since Christmas.

Can't decide whether I'm glass half full or glass half empty when it comes to our promotion chances.
On one hand I genuinely believe we've got a better all around squad than the last couple of seasons, I think that's been evidenced by the last few friendlies where in the second half, on paper a slightly weaker team has been fielded but actually impressed more than the stronger team in the first half. Really excited to see some of the youngsters like Hargreaves, Tomlinson, Kilgour, Mehew break through and challenge for a spot in the first team squad, I reckon we'll be selling a few on for good profits to top clubs in a few years. I also really like our transfer business this window, we've added creativity in the midfield, pinched a L1 teams captain, signed some competition for LWB, all really good additions. I think we've got a plan and are building towards something, just don't quite know if its going to happen this season.
On the other, there are a few things that rein in my optimism a bit. Firstly the elephant in the room which is Garners record as Rovers manager, I don't think it needs to be said that it must improve if we are to improve this year, he's got his own squad, backroom staff and training ground, all the tools to succeed. Secondly losing JCH is a big blow, we got a good deal for him, yes, but we've got to replace those goals it's a must really or we aren't challenging towards the top this season with what we currently have. Lastly it is a tougher division than the last few years, perhaps that's because a club like Wycombe went up in the playoffs leaving Ipswich and Sunderland to compete in the league for another season + some teams who will be decent coming down, I don't know but it will tough.
All I know is we’re in for an interesting season and as evidenced by Wycombe last year and Luton the year before, anything can happen.

Two things for me.Agree with Gascoach about our football and formation looking very good. We are going to be hard to beat too.
On the plus side, I think it'll be a weaker division than last - 3 teams coming down are either short of quality players and/ or in danger of going bust. I can't see them even getting in the top 6. Teams coming up are also unlikely to challenge. ipswich, Pompey and Sunderland ought to be challenging for top 2 but are they really that good when you see their squads ? No intimidating crowds is also a bonus.
On the negative side - we should create more than the last 2 seasons but are there goals in this team ? We need a good replacement for JCH (20 goals) If we don't, for all our good play we might draw games we should win. Secondly, we are likely to have 5 or more new players in our starting 11 so we might need another season to get the best out of them as a team.
Overall, I'd be very surprised if we don't finish in the top 10 with an outside chance of top 6. If we make the 6 - we might be the surprise package - like Wycombe !! UTG !

Yeah feel this is where I’m at with it and I’d left out Pompey. Of the mentioned teams, I agree with 1/2 will not have great seasons. Then there will be 1/2 surprise packages like Wycombe. I guess our hope is to be the steady top 10 and flirt with the play offs I just worry if we are in the 10-13th place and say 7/9 points off playoffs will fans turn against Garner etc. When realistically that’s probably where we are at. Also, think Daly could be a gem we’ve not really mentioned. Not seen him play really but palace fans definitely wanted to keep him there. That’s a big sign for me. He’s not had a pre season, so he’s been out of sight, out of mind. Intrigued to see how he does.

I'd be happy with a top half finish.
Don't sign a striker to replace JCH and we'll be lucky to stay up.
Sign a half decent L1 striker and we should finish mid table.
Sign a 20+ goal a season striker and we have a chance of finishing top 6.

Also think our system lends itself to goals from more than one area. JCH was a focal point for Coughlan and his backs against the wall mentality. Garners style is very different. 10 from each of the front 3. 3-5 from wing backs and 6-9 from CM combined. Plus a couple from defenders.

Wycombe didn’t have as good squad as us now on paper in your opinion and were one of the favourites to go down yet they won promotion. It isn’t about big names or having players on top whack it’s about building a squad who get on with each other work hard for each other and compliment each other’s styles of play which creates a balance in the squad which accumulates enough points to win promotion. Our squad will only be better than theirs last season if we win promotion this season with more points than they did. Look in the book as they say.

Mid table at the moment, if we get or develop a reliable scorer then I think we will be top 10 with a chance.
Stay with the chasing pack by the New Year, recruit the one or two missing pieces in January and we could be looking well placed for a final push.
Mind you, I reserve the right to change that after 10 games.
