One positive, one negative and cutting edge analysis coming up, here we go: Mark Little was ABYSMAL. Jack Baldwin was superb. Onto Tuesday. Do you think Baldwin did well? I thought he started well, some great threaded balls through players in CM or higher. Then went to pot and gave the ball away loads. However I do like him. Best ball player out of the 3. I do. He was composed, confident on the ball, is easily our best ball playing defender. For mistake ridden performance, see Mr Kilgour, who had an absolute nightmare throughout. There was no surprise Ipswich targeted him from the off & it paid dividends. There is certainly no panic here, we just have to value the fact we have two competitive fixtures before the season opener.

Agree with most from OP. Kilgour is definitely not left sided player! Tutonda and JML on wings for me. Ayunga makes up the one for 3 up front, Little creates too many risks for us; some of his simple passes early on were sloppy, all 3 goals came from our right defence?! Where was Little? Hare much better right back and great crosser! Upson in middle with Westbrook plus ..,,? Grant nowhere in game bar foul for booking; reminds me of dare I say it Payne?! Team easily bullied bar Ayunga. Possession and ball control terrible! PS JML should be told to shoot as soon as within social / shooting distance from goalie! The only way NOW is up! UTG Exactly as i saw the game unfold on I player yesterday. Must admit Grant was quite a disapointment to me as the only time i heard his name was when he was booked.

If your a right footed centre-back and you cannot play on the left side you need to find another job in my view. I get it with full backs and some wingers but not central players. Did you see where Kilgour receives the ball when he plays in a 3? It’s outside of the penalty box and wide, very similar to a full back. You’ve answered your own question. Added to that see where he then distributes the ball. I think he played forward 2/3 times the whole game. For clarity this is not a Kilgour bash. I’d have him in my team, just not left of a 3.

gascoachAs a coach yourself who clearly knows their stuff - what do you think about the system BG has chosen to go with this season? Do you think we have the players to make 3-4-3 work? (With a new striker added, of course). It’s still way too early in the season to make any judgements on the team or individuals, but I would have wanted to see us look much more comfortable in that system than we did yesterday having worked on it for the last 6/7 weeks...

Kind words, footballs opinions, I’ve got a few but wouldn’t say they are always right. The system can definitely work. Sheffield United have done it with good effect and more teams are adopting it. Agree I’d of like it to look better than it did yesterday. However 8 days before that it looked accomplished against a good championship side. Personally I don’t like a back 3 when it’s 3 out and out CB’s. When you use fullbacks that can play centrally it works better. They will naturally go higher than CB’s and therefore push the wing backs on. This gives us better passing options and in turn mean we don’t play the first 45 mins in our half. I certainly don’t think there’s a need to panic. The introduction of Ayunga made a difference. I don’t think we can change the system. Heard a Gary Neville interview where his biggest mistake in Valencia was to keep changing shape if it didn’t work. BG has to show strength and stick with this. As mentioned previously I don’t think this season’s record can be added to last year. New players and a new system. However we are still P1, L1 and unfortunately BG’s tenure gets judged as a whole. Last year felt he was managing Coughlins principles, this seasons are his. Ultimately to answer your question I do think we have great balance in our squad for it to work. Harries or Kelly on the left of the 3 is a must. As is Jonah or another striker with back to goal capabilities is essential. I’ve really liked upson in pre season, he controls the game but do fear his mobility will mean he will struggle in a 2. We could maybe adopt a 3-4-1-2. Extra player in the middle and 2 strikers to be slightly more direct when needed. Peterborough have adopted this formation. I also don’t think we’ll know for another 5/6 weeks. Yesterday may well of just been one of those days and a performance in isolation. 4/5 more performance like it and we are in a bad place. Tuesday against a lower league oppo and at home will be very interesting.

No-one seems to be laying any blame at Ehmer, our number 5. For the first goal he tracked back too slowly as the last line of defence. For the second goal he was vaguely nudged before the corner came over and flopped to the ground claiming a foul instead of making his presence felt and staying on his feet. For the third goal he was caught inside the Ipswich half as they launched an attack. We were way off the pace and badly organised and we are there for the taking if it continues.

The second goal reminded me of Johnny Burn trying to mark Wyke up at Bradford a few years ago. And Wyke scored a hat trick for 3-0? Was there. It was live on Sky? He is playing for Sunderland so let's c what happens next week. If he plays most games this season, and the way Sunderland are playing at the moment and creating chances, I fancy him being one of the top goal scorers in the League. There are a lot of fans saying we need a proven goal scorer. If we do not create chances, it usually does not matter who you have up front? Toney today for Brentford missed a hatful of chances, although none clear cut. Isn't he a proven goal scorer? Personally, from my initial glimpse, I liked the Wycombe ex-Hibs striker Horgan who came on scored. Something about him indicates he may be a player to watch out for but a more creative club would suit him better? I don't think Brentford will be letting go of Forss soon based on Toney's performance today. In fact, I see Forss getting more and more game time as the season goes on. Ayunga has shown good promise; stick with him definitely. One of the very few positives from yesterday. UTG
