So months in anticipation all came together into a whimper at Portman Road today. The first game always has an extra bit of emotion attached due to the wait for it. Even more so when it’s been 6 months.
To coin a Darrell Clarke phrase, don’t get too high when you win and don’t be too low when you lose. The truth is always somewhere in between.
As mentioned before I am a full rose tinter but today was not great. Compounded by BG’s interview afterwards where there seemed to be little acknowledgment of how poor we were.
Some take away points.
Alfie Kilgour - cannot play left a three. His body shape is wrong as he’s right footed so constantly played back into Baldwin or JVS. Rather than a natural left footer that would open his body out and play forward.
The CB’s. Our most 3 dominant aerially on paper. Yet we were done twice with such basic straight balls. One was for my their Keeper. Not acceptable. Not at all.
Westwood and Grant. Like to play, they want they ball. However today were pressed well and didn’t link the defence to attack well enough. Would receive the ball just to bounce back in the back 3 to then go long and give the ball away.
I wanted to see how we started the season with JCH, did think we might be ok. Well I’m wrong. Fair play to Garner recognising this and subbing on Ayunga at HT. (probably could of done it after 7 mins).
My frustration is we knew Ipswich will be a game we will have less of the ball than Walsall. Surely Ayunga plays today and use JML as a 9 in the Walsall game where we will have more of the ball. His thinking is Jonah maybe more likely to get a goal v Walsall and better for his confidence.
Leahy - meh. A bit slow, a bit of a decent left foot. Nice new hair style. Bang average.
Nicholson will come could, like him a works hard and when we did have Jonah and had someone to play off looked lively.
Left frustrated by BG’s comments. Yes we should of taken chances, Nicholson’s at 1-0 was huge and yes they took there’s. But there was 45 mins of play where it was attack v defence and our inability to sustain any territory or look like we could is worrying.
All this said, Ipswich are fancied. They pressed us very well. Take the 3rd with a pinch of salt as it came down our right 10 seconds after the sub of Baldwin with a change on that side.
The 2nd was a set piece - easily correctable.
We also did look better with Jonah and with a striker apparently coming in, I don’t think we’ll regularly see a first 45 mins like we did. BG changing it at HT also suggests he knows we are lacking their.
Add Harries or Kelly on the left for balance. Personally I would have little and Kelly in the 3. Full backs tend to be happier drifting into wide areas to defend and receive the ball. This then pushes our wing backs up.
Add to this, we do have a lot of new players that are still learning a new system and now it’s started properly the intensity has gone up and the system and players get tested thoroughly. I know Garner can’t have forever but I fear today’s defeat gets chucked in with his previous record. I love what he’s trying to do. The young players, the 3-4-3, they trying to play out. I just hope it works. Some have a lot less patience than others.
Today was rubbish, it’s the carabao cup. Let’s move on and wallop Walsall 4-0. Then we’ll all think we’ll win the league.
I’ll finish as I started by suggesting should we do that the truth of where we are is somewhere in between.
Disappointed but not hysterical. We move on.

Leahy was poor today I thought, never really been a fan of his. If I was Garner, I’d be seriously considering starting Tutonda at Sunderland next week, he’s got the creativity to make things happen going forward and can’t be much worse than Leahy defensively.

Tutonda definitely has to start on Tuesday. Then if he plays well, he deserves to start against Sunderland.

Yeah I’m not sold on him, he’s not quick enough for me. Even more so now he doesn’t have a winger in front of him. Maybe as left back he could just sit in there and use his solid left foot but as a wing back you need to be dynamic. Maybe BG felt the wingbacks would be deeper today and would need a good quality of ball forward from deep which Leahy I would suggest does have over Dave. Hindsight is wonderful but agree. Tutonda over Leahy for me.

Thanks for the review. We will be at least top half this season, possibly challenging for top 6. We will have a decent season.

Plenty to work on I agree but Ipswich will be at the very top imo, and it was only a cup game so not worried at all. We will have a good season, starting with a positive result next weekend. I'm expecting a reaction.

Agree with most from OP. Kilgour is definitely not left sided player! Tutonda and JML on wings for me. Ayunga makes up the one for 3 up front, Little creates too many risks for us; some of his simple passes early on were sloppy, all 3 goals came from our right defence?! Where was Little? Hare much better right back and great crosser! Upson in middle with Westbrook plus ..,,? Grant nowhere in game bar foul for booking; reminds me of dare I say it Payne?! Team easily bullied bar Ayunga. Possession and ball control terrible!
PS JML should be told to shoot as soon as within social / shooting distance from goalie!
The only way NOW is up! UTG

I agree with the OP about Kilgour - he can play LCB in a GC back three where the wingbacks are positioned closer to the wider CBs & there isn’t the same emphasis on passing out from the back & playing through the lines - but yesterday he looked extremely uncomfortable both in and out of possession. I’m not sure the way BG wants his CBs to use the ball is particularly Kilgour’s game anyway; but the bloke’s got no chance when he’s expected to use his weaker foot to play forward all the time.

Had a beer had we then mate? 2 responses to this. Firstly, I was managing a football team last season, so watched very little of the Coughlan side. So I can’t comment on how he did. However not sure if you realised we play more football under Garner. From what I saw under Coughlin it was bodies on the line and going direct into JCH. So you could of had 2 left feet in that back 3 and still performed well, providing you could head and tackle. Under Garner we play from the back, this means players need a different skill set. For Eg a left foot to play left of a back 3. Secondly, I gave you my reasons as to what the f**k I was on about by explaining about body shape to receive the ball and play forward. Finally, have a wonderful Sunday.

One positive, one negative and cutting edge analysis coming up, here we go:
Mark Little was ABYSMAL.
Jack Baldwin was superb.
Onto Tuesday.

I thought he started well, some great threaded balls through players in CM or higher. Then went to pot and gave the ball away loads. However I do like him. Best ball player out of the 3.

If I was Garner, I’d be seriously considering starting Tutonda at Sunderland next week, he’s got the creativity to make things happen going forward and can’t be much worse than Leahy defensively. I've never been a fan. If I was an opposition manager all I would day to my players is attack Rovers down their left side and you'll score goals

Baldwin performed exactly how Sunderland fans said he would... crap. Based on yesterday we have signed a right dud. Leahy continued where he left off last season, looking forward to the new lad getting a chance.

I do wonder who takes care of them in training given we have no defensive coach, although we've no striker either to give them a good work out in training anyway!

If your a right footed centre-back and you cannot play on the left side you need to find another job in my view. I get it with full backs and some wingers but not central players.
