I definitely see parallels between us now and Trollope’s side when he was sacked in our relegation season from League One. He tried to turn us into a tippy-tappy side with dire consequences.

It probably looks good and might even work on fifa20 or some other football manager game, but this is 3rd division, uncompromising hard tough, physical, bruisers real life.

The other parallel to be drawn is that Trollope got rid of a lot of the established members of the squad in 9/10 that had been mainstays in previous seasons. The likes of Lambert, Phillips, Walker, Disley, Haldane, Lescott, Hinton, Green. You just look at our activity this year and we've lost or will lose Sercombe, Clarke, Craig, JCH, Ogogo, Menayese, Nichols. I sincerely hope history doesn't repeat itself.

Whoever gets promotion will have players who can score goals whatever system they play. Some teams have a CF who will get 20 goals, some teams will have a midfield with plenty of goals, unfortunately at the moment we don’t have those. In recent times we had a team with a strong defence which couldn’t score goals and we went out of the league. DC was able to recruit and play in a lower league, the Conference, and fit his system to the players he had and it worked. Not great football in the Conference but we came back up. He recruited BB to replace Monkhouse and we had Lines and could play a more expansive game. But he planned his system to the players he had, it was better football as well.
But League 1 is a much harder league and all have struggled to challenge at the top end, even DC. GC was the most practical of our managers and knew what he had and played a system that suited the players. It wasn’t pretty but fairly effective. From Christmas BG tried to play a different style and it didn’t work. He’s recruited well but then our CF gets sold. I’m sure we will recruit but we could have done without the gap between JCH going and the new recruit coming.
But whatever happens BG will have to play a system to suit his players. I didn’t watch last night but I did Ipswich and Little and Leahy didn’t suit his system and left gaps which were exploited for all the goals. I prefer winning football to losing football and whilst I’d love to see us play like a Pep G team but I’d rather we played winning football. And if BG continues to play football that doesn’t win matches he will be gone fairly quickly.
UTG!
ps. Some on here of my vintage may disagree but our 73/74 team under Don Megson had that great win at Brighton and we hammered a few other teams but by and large we were a team very hard to beat. We had lots of draws and we weren’t the greatest footballing team. Bill Dodgins team the seasons before from 69-72 were better footballing teams. Megson was a practical man and set up his teams not to lose and had the good fortune to have smash and grab with Kenny Stephens and Colin Dobson to supply them with Frankie Prince and Tom Stanton protecting the defence. No tippy taps stuff there! My point being, a good manager sets up his team to play a system that suits them. Of course he will have his style but if he plays a style that doesn’t suit the players then it won’t last. Megson, Ollie, DC realised that as did GC. Not sure that BG has realised that yet, he will need to realise it very quickly.

I wonder of we will play 3 at the back at sunderland, and when we start letting in goals will he change to a back 4 or 5? Somehow I doubt it. I think he is a one formation pony We lost 3-0 there last season, so anything better than that is progress.

Not sure that BG has realised that yet, he will need to realise it very quickly. Very well put. This is a results game. In the Premier League, etc. Teams like Wolves, Leicester, Burnley, Sheffield United, Southampton, etc. Know they cannot compete with the Big Money 6 so have developed a style that can make them compete. They have very good defences and play on the break. Very rarely do they get thrashed and are generally always in the game. The 9-0 for Southampton was a blip and a wake up call; they were one of the most improved teams after that result with the same set of players and started to play good flowing football. We need to start from the back and build a solid defence. Once there is confidence, the midfield can then attack and create more. I am probably one of the few not calling for more strikers; I have been impressed with Ayunga and JML so far. If one gets injured, then we could have real problems? These players look like they can convert chances, if they get them. Ayunga will get better and better and at present should be the first one to start up front. We have a lot of problems to sort out in midfield. Nicholson, Westbrook, Hargreaves, Grant, Barrett, Upson, hopefully Ogogo, etc. Some of the youngsters should only be playing 60’ at most I think. We need a midfield dynamo to gel them together. At the moment I do not see it.
