Just watched the highlights of Chelsea vs Barnsley and talk about a team that look out of sorts with playing out from the back. Definitely one to watch to see what happens to you if you hesitate or are uncomfortable on the ball with these tactics. Scary!

It’s hard enough to play out from the back when your the better side let alone when your Barnsley playing Chelsea. This is why we shouldn’t do it, we’re an average side in league 1 with players not capable of doing it.

Lincoln tried it a few times vs Liverpool yesterday and got punished.
Our players do not have the control, passing ability and pace to do this; not yet anyway. They may be able to do it a few times but will then lose the ball in the worst places possible. We have enough problems trying to keep the ball when we have it at the moment? You see so many teams now doing it AND conceding stupid goals.
I am glad Anssi prefers to look for the longer ball option more than the short pass and hope he is not pressurised to adopt the "tippy tappy" play at the back.

Even in the pre season friendlies it was evident we were playing ourselves into trouble when we played out from the back. Yes, the squad have had time on the training pitch since but Ive seen little to inspire confidence in the competitive games since. It would be great if we could play that way

Yes, the squad have had time on the training pitch since but Ive seen little to inspire confidence in the competitive games since. It would be great if we could play that way Personally I'm not a big fan of playing it around the back. I don't think being direct and being long-ball are one-and-the-same. I enjoy seeing teams get the ball out of defense quickly by ensuring the midfield are "seeing" and then bringing the ball up the pitch quickly. As many have said on the Josh Sheehan thread, it's his ability to collect the ball from the defense and drive forward that would be so exciting, if we were to sign him (not that I'm at all convinced we will or want to). This is not to say that our defenders should not be able to pass the ball, but I think distribution should be a little more direct towards the midfield / wingbacks than simply tapping it around the back, as that is just a recipe for disaster. We cannot afford to concede 1 or 2 sloppy goals every match by playing this way.

Surprised Lincoln have gone from the Wimbledon type long ball under the Cowley's to playing from the back under Appleton, did Garner ever work with him at WBA?, I sense trying that approach last night was suicidal. Although in the league it seems to be working for them a lot than us!

if players are comfortable playing it out from the back then great but if just one struggles with it then the opponents will cash in on it. Youa re only as good as your weakest link
