After defeat against Posh (who we’ve not beaten since the Stuart Campbell playing days) and a result that prior to the game most of us expected, we again see a number of critical posts about BG.
Maybe it’s just me but I thought we played quite well against Posh. We more than matched them and it was just the final 3rd where we let ourselves down. Hare had numerous crosses but for once they were poorly executed and we were just always trying to walk the ball in the net rather than taking an earlier shot .... we lacked penetration.
Posh were more purposeful and took shots early and more long shots as proven by the stats.
We are a young improving inconsistent (which is expected from a really young team which only really got put together in the summer) that is still maturing and gelling under a new style of play.
3 wins, 3 draws and 4 defeats having also played 5 of the top 8 with patches of great play in games but no complete performances is kinda what I expected and isn’t a bad start?
This team will never be a team of blood and thunder run around and bully kind of team - it’s a more technical passing side and whilst I think we can sometimes do it a bit too much , the pass it around the back is all about keeping the ball and slowly moving up the pitch whilst probing and looking for a forward break.
Our issue against Peterborough was our poor performances from our wing backs and our lack of desire to take an early shot.
I’m still firmly behind BG and can see the improvement and what we are trying to do. I firmly believe we will end up a mid table side this season which will be ok and I fully then expect a stronger push for promotion next season...

I'm like you mate so there are 2 of us at least. I am not one of these when we get a win i'm like WOO HOO promotion! I just think, yes thats more experience in the bank and a decent points haul. With the draws its a case of experience in the bank again and either well earned or disappointed we didn't find the winning goal. And with losses in the most part i can find the positives and again experience in the bank.
I like to think of the positives in this forum too. At the start it was a lot of comments around "WE MUST SACK BG NOW"... today its more of "well this passing out the back is boring" and "BG needs to do this or that in future". Only a small number of comments around "GET RID!" & "WE ARE SLEEP WALKING INTO LEAGUE 2" type stuff.
So well done forum and BG and BRFC for slowly bring us around.
P.s. for those like me that were unable to watch the WHOLE match the extended highlights do show a bit more of us in a more positive way. I think to myself if Hanlans turn and shot goes in, we are all celebrating one of the best worked goals in our season. I'll watch again and count the passes cuz it felt like loads in their half as we probed etc

We are a mid table side at present, the team and philosophy is all new...if by December we are not looking more competent I would say thing should be considered but not right now.
I am more interest in the development of the Training ground and other things hopefully going on... when ever I put ifollow on and have to look at the bare concrete of the east terrace and the tent towards the Thatchers end, I can't help cringe.

The wing backs going off the boil in the last couple of games is a big and often overlooked factor for me. Both good players so hopefully their form picks back up again. Although we do still need a greater central threat behind Hanlon.

I agree, I thought we played fairly well against a top side. I did expect them to be the better side and realistically hoped for a draw. Two great shots won them the game. I think we need to shoot more but ive said that for pretty much most Rovers sides over the years. A home crowd would have given us a boost but unfortunately we don't have that. Steady improvement and I believe we are a top 7 side or will be as things progress.

I'm still behind him, but that doesn't mean criticism is not warranted. I'd have still said the same had we won. For him to say we outpassed and outplayed Peterborough is disingenuous and he needs to be called out for it.
Did we play badly? No. Did we play well? Not if you consider the amount of chances we created and conceded.
If you read back through my posts I am always happy to give credit where it's due, but I'll always try to call a spade a spade. I'm not saying that the result against Posh was a disaster and I don't think results like that will define our season, but at the same time I don't think keeping possession in our own third represents a performance worthy of praise.

I think the problem is the lack of attempts; the lack of chances created.
We play some pleasant tippy-tappy football, but it's ultimately harmless and usually in our own half or - at best - near the halfway line.
I think you're right that we probably should have expected to have lost to a very good Posh side and that we certainly didn't disgrace ourselves.
However, if you look at Rochdale, Shrewsbury etc, you'd have expected us to have had each of them on the back foot for large chunks of the game and, ultimately, to have had several chances - but that wasn't the case.
I want to see us really starting to take the game to lesser sides - irrespective of the scoreline, I expect to see us having numerous attempts and really look a threat. I don't think that's asking for much, and yet there's not a lot of evidence to give me faith at present.
I hope we play a full strength side against Walsall and I really hope we really go for it. No exuses in that game - they're a league below us.

I sense a non league side in a cup game could play "quite well" against P'boro without ever actually looking like scoring, I can't see what progress we're making as a club, we've gone from GC's "boring" football which had inside to the top 6 to BG's possession football, which after a run of good results has now reverted back to last season's form, over the 25 games BG's been in charge only Shrewsbury have picked up less L1 pts.

This actually looks like a really good season to build a side.... Loads of strong teams at the top which provide a huge challenge and quite a lot of winnables....
I agree with jomo though, its not just the team that needs to learn, the manager could do with learning to relay a bit more balance during interviews.... I wonder if he has the same views in post match team talks?
Its a learning curve, hopefully it will work....

Our issue against Peterborough was our poor performances from our wing backs and our lack of desire to take an early shot. I can't disagree with any of your post, however in addition to the above bit I also think that there are a couple of other issues with the way that we are playing at the moment. - When the ball is being played across the back 3, there is often no outlet for them in midfield. Forcing them to play it around the back more and giving the opposition time to close them down and make a mistake / lump the ball forward.
- Quite often when the ball does move forward into midfield in a dangerous position, the pace is very slow once the player picks it up / they have little options themselves and the ball is lost / played back to the back three giving the opposition time to get back into their formation and close us down.

Fair points from the OP, but I think we can also fairly criticise the lack of attacking intent and threat when we are in possession, and BG's unwillingness (or inability) to change things from the touchline during games. Yes we are a mostly young and developing squad, and the manager is young and new too. I hope BG can see as well as we can the issues with the way the team plays and with his own performances and he can move both forwards. I will admit I was one of those who after the early cup games and first three league games this season, and taking into account the appalling record carried over from last, that couldn't see how he could make it work - but he has shown improvements. The last three games with the two home defeats have knocked this back a bit, but as I said, I hope he can learn from these setbacks and performances. As gregsgas says, this could be a good season to build/develop with some scope for getting it wrong as he learns, just as long as we don't sink too much lower in the table.

It does amuse when when people were saying not that long ago its the worst side we've ever had etc etc. Very short memories, forgetting the recent non league days and all those dull seasons in League two where we hung onto our league status.
Too many people are a bit out of touch with the expectations. Yes we all want success but we are probably a mid table league one team at best with below average league two facilities. We will struggle to compete with the top teams in this league who can spend a decent amount of money. Our record against these top teams is very poor, it pretty much always has been. Apart from the rare win at Ipswich last season we pretty much lost every game away from home (and most at home) against the ex premier league teams during the last ten years.

In this league you need forwards, midfielders, and defenders who can technically play but also "bully" the opposition. That is one of the reasons we got to 3rd in the league last season. My gripes against Garner are: We needed an experienced forward up front. He chose Hanlon who although experienced is not a striker then we have a kid, and a non league player. Far too many midfielders whilst some are technically very good they all lack pace and drive need to break through opposing teams (he should have played Oggogo for the drive) Defenders again too many and some are just crap. He does not have a plan "B". Every game is the same fromation, usually with the same players, and the subs are usually "like for like". Passing it about at the back and working "slowly" forward might work in other leagues, but not 1 and 2. (Remeber we were promised "Exciting Football". It's not. It's slow, it's tedious and boring. And if there were crowds there they would be booing at watching the ball going from and attacking corner back to our goalie in 3 passes or endlessly passing it sideways. We know this we have all witnessed it at the Mem. Finally Garner himself. I will admit he is getting better at interviews, but, when he says we had more posession than our opponents I think the majority of us think he means all over the field, not just stuck in our own half. The actual stat that you can rely on though is "shots on target" which if you look at are very poor. As for his assertion we are "not far off" being a top 6 team are simply Bollox. And if the plan is to sell our bestplayers every season we will always be a Division One team.

As soon as we went 2 down I thought it was game over, which says it all really. We are just not creating enough for all the possession we have and making too many silly mistakes too easily. I am getting frustrated with BG as he keeps talking about possession as though that is what determines the result of a match, it's not. We need being having more shots on target and limiting the opposition more.

I really can't understand why Wael appointed a trainee manager when there's plenty of experienced managers around.

I'd like to see Ayunga back fit again. I'm sure he would have featured more if he wasn't injured. He's got the sort of movement that creates space and he shoots on sight. He came on to partner Hanlan in one game before he got injured but they didn't pair very well and he looked a bit lost. Hanlan is a rough and tumble type centre forward who keeps the ball close to his feet and can get around his marker quite easily but he doesn't get into scoring positions much.

You cannot really do that without the decent facilities. That way we would at least have a better chance of keeping our best players, maybe be able to spend a bit more too.
