Only good news to come out of that DCMS meeting.
Absolute dinosaur.

To be fair it’s a bit of a minefield though. I’m well aware that it’s considered racist to call people of colour “coloured people “ However I’ve heard lots of people of colour refer to themselves and other people of colour as “ people of colour.” For an old white man like Clarke and others like him it’s no wonder they make these mistakes and come across as racist when they refer to people of colour which your allowed to say as coloured people which your not allowed to say.

The “coloured” remark has made the headlines but he also referred to being gay as lifestyle choice and said I quote “If you go to the IT department at the FA there’s a lot more South Asians than there are Afro Caribbeans. They have different career interests” If it was just one slip of the tongue, I would have more sympathy for him but it’s part of a string of ignorant and offensive things he has said. Doesn’t set a good example at all being the chairman of the English FA.

I’ve heard a fair bit of his interview and he’s just a clumsy old twerp, I think he was genuinely trying to do and say the right thing and got it wrong. Only small parts made headlines and in this day and age his position probably became untenable, fair play to him for falling on his sword when he rightly could have stood his ground and defended himself.

I know people who would say coloured people as a slip of the tongue, no malice in it. Just a simple mistake.
However they aren't in charge of an organisation that has never got a grip on racism in the sport.
He is rightly held to a higher standard.

The term "coloured people" became inappropriate when I was at school in the 80s. Whilst there may be some understanding in terms of age, he held a position which should either have briefed him better by now or he should have sought clarity. Not only that, the other phrases mentioned in the posts above are not what you want to hear from an organisation trying to project an inclusive message. He didn't really have any choice.

That’s exactly what I took from it. Heard the headline on the BBC News and they said that people might be offended by what they hear. After I heard the item I wondered if I’d missed something. So heard more and agree with what you’ve said eric, a clumsy old twerp, trying to say the right thing and being a tad clumsy. And in this day and age enough people were ready to jump on him. I suspect the resignation was the accumulation of many errors over the past year or so and not just today. As FA boss I’m sure he is expected to have higher standards as tommym9 has said and the FA don’t have a record to be proud of with regards racism so he’d have found little support there. I’m glad nowadays that I don’t have to try and discriminate the difference between the world-wide acceptance in calling the new vice-president of the USA a “woman of colour” and the use of “coloured” by someone who was clumsy in his use of words. Whatever, I hope the new FA boss addresses the issues of racism so that it can lead to real change and not just fumble around making the wrong headlines. UTG!

My son spends a lot of time in South Africa, where the term "coloured" is not considered to be discriminatory. People protested when it was suggested that it was not an acceptable term, they consider an insult to be referred to as dual heritage and suchlike. He has to endeavour to make sure he uses the correct terminology, depending which country he is in!
Now that I've been away from the workplace for a while, and don't really socialise very much, I do worry that I'm not going to keep up to date with what's acceptable and what isn't - terminology seem to change on a fairly regular basis.

He might be "a clumsy old twerp" but think of the position he is in and the context around that. As FA chairman he should be leading by example and he sounds like a bit of an ignorant dick with the comments he has made.

It shouldn't get to a stage where a player is scared not to take the knee incase it affects publicity for them or the club. That is where we are with it, that is totally wrong in my view. If I was a Bristol Rovers player I would take the knee but not really mean it if I'm honest.

www.amazon.co.uk/Black-Jokes-About-White-Folks-ebook/dp/B08CPJMPSNIts just too one sided. Black Lives Matter have published a book where they make jokes about white people. It's openly sold on Amazon. So I typed in the opposite, yes suprise, suprise...nothing. Everyone knows racism is abhorrent, but it will NEVER change with double standards and there are plenty of them.

Didn’t catch all of the interview but there was a black ex footballer turned author on Sky earlier and one of the things he said is that people don’t know what terminology to use and a wrong phrase can inadvertently be used as they are afraid to say the word black. Rounding on people who make an innocent mistake isn’t going to help close divides or encourage debate. I even heard someone refer to Clarke’s comment as “abhorrent“. Really?

This has nothing to do with the Black Lives Matter movement or what a book on Amazon says or doesn't say.
