This game was just a year before I saw my first game aged seven. Pappy(grandad) as we called him was there and told me all about it, probably caused me to keep on about going to a game and a year later I was allowed to go. That forward line was arguably Rovers best ever. A 3-2 win at that game over Notts Forest got me hooked and I still am! UTG!

Whatever happened to indirect free kicks ? I think what used to be refered to as obstruction is now just generally considered foul play, I'm probably wrong mind.... [br Your as alway Paul are correct in that assumption.

Before my time too. Just wondering what the attendance was for the match. Our record attendance of 38,472 was in 1960 just surprised against Man Utd it wasn't higher. Bet trying to get your hands on a match day programme for this is rarer than hens teeth. In 1956 the ground capacity of Eastville was set at just under 36,000. In 1958 this increased to 39,000 due to the upgrading of the North side that included the building of the North stand. The Preston game in 1960 was all ticket and a 38,500 limit was set and the game was a complete sell out. I was there for that game, a 3-3 draw, unfortunately we lost the replay 5-1!

Happened regularly until they put in a new drainage system for the River Froome behind the South stand.

Me too, there were people climbing the floodlights and even one or two on the roof of the South Stand ! . We could and should have won that game and of course we got well beaten in the replay. The only crumb of comfort was that out attendance was 5,000 bigger than theirs!. The souvenir from the first game was a PNE rattle (minus the handle !) which hit me on the head after the first goal went in. When we again took the lead the broken handle again hit me. I took it home and my old Dad repaired for me and painted it in blue and white which for a closet City fan was a magnanimous gesture !!

Wonderful stuff! what a forward line that was! and some 'proper' defenders! think the heavy ground helped us , shame Duncan Edwards was injured, That United side was one of the best ever but sad to say several lost there lives just a couple years later. remember listening to the 1/4 final on the wireless, well beaten by Fulham.

Actually, a 'deliberate' back pass to the goal keeper still results in an indirect free-kick, so they do still exist.... Only by means of a rule that didn't exist when indirect free kicks were commonly given....

Hence why the ref keeps his arm in the air until someone has touched it.

In later years Byrne's handball would have resulted in a sending off.
Surprised their all wearing short sleeves - in January!

To mark the 50th anniversary, the SC held a celebration evening at the Mem. It so happened that it was Ray Kendall's funeral the same day.
The clubhouse was packed and it was good to see so many stars of that era in attendance. Bill Roost and Josser were in top form and it was great to hear Alfie speak with such passion.
It was sad to see Georgie Petherbridge was clearly unwell, but his granddaughter thanked the committee and said that there was a spark of recognition when he saw his old team mates and heard Goodnight Irene.
We contacted the owners of Pathe films and the cost to borrow some highlights (not of the Man U game but of that era) was astronomical. Luckily a Rovers fan at HTV managed to obtain some historical footage such as a friendly at the Duke of Beaufort's estate amongst a few others. I believe Screen Soccer now have copies.
The SC produced some 50th anniversary merchandise (mugs, tee shirts etc) and Keith Brookman produced a programme in a current style, with a copy of the original programme enclosed.
Jamie Howarth may have some copies if anyone is interested.
