Probably looked at his own shocking performances this season, blokes an embarrassment,51 games for Sunderland one goal, makes TN look prolific. Anyone that wanted him here would be crazy. Another no. Scoring striker.

Scoring striker. An embarrassment with 174 career goals? Excellent career. He could have stayed on and collected his cash but knew Father Time had caught up with him and did an honourable thing that few people would have done by cancelling his contract.

Should of retired in the summer, another journeyman who’s plodded around clubs picking up the signing on fee, see Stephan Payne, Rory Fallon, Matt Harold, Justin Richards as examples.

Harsh on Matt Harold IMO. Always gave 100% when he played for us and scored 24 goals in 76 appearances. Came along to Wembley to support us in the 2015 playoff final.

To be fair I’ll take that back, he did try, even if he spent a fair amount of the time on his knees, but he could take a good penalty, I’ll replace him with the nightmare that is Jefferson Louis.

To be fair, I would have had him at Rovers. Not a good goal scoring record but an experienced option up front.
Very surprised he has retired though after his comments when he left Sunderland...
"At this point in my career, it is no secret that I want to be playing regular football, so I appreciate the understanding shown by the club in allowing me to pursue the opportunity to do this."
Doesn't sound like a man looking to retire. I assume he couldn't get the calibre of club or the wages he wanted elsewhere.

It was the offer from Rovers that changed his mind and convinced him to retire.
