In March 2000 we were top of the league with 10 matches to go and yet failed to make the play-offs. During the last 10 matches we won 1, drew 3, lost 6. The one win was against '82.
What went wrong?

I went wrong. I’d been away for 3 years and cut a 3 month tour of South America in half to catch the tail end of that season. I should of stayed in Bogota. It wasn’t all bad though, as Mrs Gasshole has never asked to come to another game after Cardiff away.

Losing Mauge and Pritchard to injury and failing to adequately replace them didn't help.

Roberts and Cureton stopped scoring because they wanted to get away?

Never really got over it. Learned to live with it, yes, deal with it, no.

I was about 17 and bricking it. It did make me wonder, usually in football, the “firm” is usually a small bunch of guys, maybe 50-200. If seemed with Cardiff their firm was one entire stand, from memory it was a couple of thousand surrounding the car park. Mad.

If we had maintained our form and got promoted, what do people think would have happened? Could we have stayed up and kicked on or would we have struggled and gone straight back down? Tranmere, QPR and Huddersfield got relegated from Division 1 the following season. Even then we probably would have had the worst facilities in the league, although there were arguably a few smaller clubs than us that stayed up. Gillingham, Crewe, Stockport & Grimsby

Mrs G is from NZ. she was particularly unimpressed with my mate who had just got out of prison, and seemed hell bent on getting back there as soon as possible. She’s never seen anything like it, apart the time I took her to see the Rovers at Ashton. 😂

Losing Mauge and Pritchard to injury and failing to adequately replace them didn't help. replacing them with two on loan youngsters probably did for us. Wollaston was one. Think they both made their debut at millwall and they totally destroyed us that day. Writing was on the wall that day on how much as a club we wanted promotion when those two started the game

Both 17-year-olds if memory serves me right

That seems a bit old for a firm - i'd have gone for the 200 year old first (low hanging fruit)

I was 13 at the end of that season. To this day, I still feel that that collapse was more gut wrenching than anything we've been through since, aside from the relegation to the conference of course. I felt worse after that than the relegation the following season. I remember saying to my Dad after we lost to Millwall and Reading in that 2-punch horror show of a week, "we may not win the league, but at least we'll get at least a play off spot". The bounce then came back with that amazing win over the Sheeds, and we then conspired to still go and blow it by losing against Blackpool and Cardiff who both went down. It was so painful to see what seemed inevitable glory, just steadily and brutally pulled away from us.

I never felt that there was any likelihood of Cardiff getting into the carpark. Or maybe I was just too angry about the dross I`d just witnessed, to care. I remember games at Cardiff, ( and Swansea ) in the eighties, where it did get very tasty.

I missed out on seeing the 6-0 win at Reading the previous season so made the effort to make it that year. We lost 2-0 and it went downhill from then. My girlfriend wasn't impressed I went either so made a bad night even worse. Earlier that season I bumped into an ex girlfriend who wanted to get back together, she had since become a single mum so had I chosen to follow her out of the pub, my life would have been very, very different. A real sliding door year for me.
