Whether you agree with his team selection or not you have to admire the way that DC is willing to make changes but in all honesty it was quite a sensible tactic today as we have a difficult game on Tuesday and then we have the unusual setting of playing the same team as today next saturday so I am sure that DC was not wanting to show his entire hand. So often in these quick return games the team who won the first match lose the return. I also feel that we have the best squad in the League and it is going to be very difficult to keep everyone happy particularly where there are 4 players not even getting in the matchday squad.
Although it was not a good first half I actually thought we retained possession for long periods well and to be honest Welling never really looked like they would be good enough to hang on to a point although they did try to "park the bus"
Mildenhall 6 Controlled his area well today and took everything that came his way. Tried to throw the ball out more but that can be a dangerous game as our back four are not the best in possession.
Lockyer 6 Defended well but again gave the ball away cheaply as times but kept trying his best and IMO did well in the second half when Balanta came on and made himself available.
Parkes 7 Always wanting the ball and trying to bring it forward. Tom is now showing his true form and his pairing with McCrystal is starting to look good again.
McCrystal 8 The transformation in the last couple of games is amazing and he now looks to be back to his very best. Very strong in the air today and covered Parkes well and controlled the defence well. We are now in the lucky position of having Trotman in reserve and I really think the competition has brought out the best in McCrystal. He is never going to be a good passer of the ball but he plays very well within his limitations.
Brown 7 Defended well and although he didn't have sucha strong game as against Barnet he still got forward well and put in some good crosses
Gosling 4 Very disappointing game. Did some good work but to me he slows the game down too much and allows defenders to take up positions. we have now been spoilt by having Della Verde and Gosling unfortunately is not a patch on either him or Balanta
Mansell 8.5 Controlled the midfield but a lot of his work goes unnoticed as he sits and performs all the tasks in the centre which allows Sinclair to run everywhere. Very unlucky not to score as well with a tremendous drive that produced a fine save from the keeper.
Sinclair 8 Shame he can't shoot because he can do everything else. Charges around the pitch covering every blade and wins many tackles he shouldn't and rarely gives the ball away. He is the driving force from the first minute to the last and how he has never played in the Football league I just don't know. Hopefully he will be putting that right next season with us!!
Monkhouse 6.5 Although not an out and out winger he makes up for this with his ability on the ball and his great strength in the air where he rarely looses a ball. He also retains possession well and knows when to pass the ball and when to hold on to it.
Taylor 7 If he had taken the chance when through against the keeper i would probably have made him Man of the Match but his failure to take that chance for me makes me have reservations about him as a striker. he did however win and score the penalty area and his linking play was one of the highlights of a poor first half. I thought on a number of occasions he linked well with Wall and his partnership with Blissett does look like it could blossum and produce goals.
Wall 6 Looked short of match practise but held the ball up well and looked a strong lad without I believe showing his full ability. I think he is a very capable player and certainly going to be useful to have available.
Blissett 8 worked hard and scored a good goal. Looks a real handfull every time he plays and I think he will continue to improve and could become a legend as I can see that it will regularly take two opponents to mark him and therefore create space for others.
Balanta 7.5 This player is without doubt a class act. He has a football brain and to be honest his movement and vision oozes class. I really feel this could turn out to be an ace signing by DC and he will be a joy to watch. looks like he is a player who can take on players in tight situations and beat players from a standing start. his pass to Blissett on the first goal was sublime and I really think he must be very close now to getting a place in the starting eleven.
Della Verde 6.5 Was very surprised to hear he wasn't starting but i can understand why DC did it. Looked dangerous when he came on but should have scored. The three substitutions took the game by the scruff of the neck and they really are in this League three talented players each in their own way. I would really have liked to have seen Wall with the service Balanta and Della Verde provided because he certainly didn't have that in the first half.
DC 7 People can criticise all they want about the Team selection today but Clarke deserves great praise for putting this team together. Every player obviously gives everything for him and although his original team selection didn't really work,it enabled Blissett and Della Verde to have a 45 minute rest and gave Wall some match practice which looked needed. IMO DC has put together the best squad we have had for many years. My only disappointment today was that Goldberg did not get a chance to show what he can offer and I really hope that we are going to get a chance to see this during the month he is here or it will be a total waste of a loan.
Referee 6.5 Not a bad performance.Very good by Conference standards!!
Tuesday i would like to see Harrison on the bench in preference to Gosling and Blissett and Balanta start.
Team
Mildenhall
Lockyer Parkes McCrystal Brown
Balanta Sinclair Mansell Della Verde
Blissett Taylor
Subs Wall Trotman Harrison Goldberg Monkhouse
However I would fully expect DC to start with Monkhouse and as it is an away match he may decide to put Clarke on the bench rather than Harrison and if he did this there would be no complaints from me as we have so many options now and this is with Leadbitter,Harrison or Clarke not included in the squad.
