Has had a stop start career at the Gas, but just tweeted will be back soon for the big push. I wonder what joey will, make of him, there is obviously a talented footballer in there , has never looked in great shape but if we could get some friendly game time into him could help us attempt to stay up. Tin hat on play nicely 😂

There’s definitely a good player there but he needs to be fitter. Don’t have any idea if he has any issues that stop him losing weight but I think until he does, he just isn’t going to reach his potential.
Apologies for going slightly off topic but reminds me of Samit Patel in cricket. He was told some years ago that if he lost weight and got fitter he’d be one of the first names on the England teamsheet. He ignored the advice and failed to get fit, and as a result he’s not played for England since. I feel Josh Barrett’s professional football career might end in the same result.

Think he has the best opportunity to show what he can do with a motivator like Barton who also played midfield. If JB can’t get a tune out of him then I’m not sure 🤔 I like Barrett and would have loved to see more, hoping when he returns he can make the grade and show us what we have all hopes he would bring

I think we are so used to stick thin athletes that someone like Barrett stands out like a sore thumb these days. I wonder what his training stats are like compared to his teammates? I think it was the start of last season that Luke Shaw at Man U was getting a bit of stick for being chunky but was actually the second fittest player in the squad. We obviously haven’t seen the best of him so far but he clearly has talent. I’m more interested in how he plays when he can get match fit rather than his body shape. Hope he turns things around.

I wouldn’t take body shape into account if he was a good footballer, plenty of good footballers that don’t look like athletes. Lee Tomlin, Billy Kee, Adebayo Akinfenwa being three that are good at this level without fitting the norms of footballers body types. Have no problems at all with that if they are contributing to the success of the football club.
Problem is, I don’t rate him regardless of the fitness issues he’s had. He’s been given a few chances by successive managers now and he’s failed to make much of an impact. IMO, at this stage of the season with only 11 games left and us fighting for our lives down the bottom, we can’t afford to take risks to accommodate players with prior fitness issues.

I’d have released him a while ago, appalling signing.

I agree with others. Regardless of his fitness, he's not been good enough. Here's hoping that we start to see him perform at a higher level once he's fully fit. Trouble is, I'm not sure that day will ever come.

By the end of this season Barrett will have made fewer senior appearances in 5 years since his debut for reading in 2015 than Luke McCormick will have made in the first team at rovers in a year and he's 6 months younger. Let's be honest, if you're playing 7 games a year at 22 you're not developing....

I disagree. I think he is a very good footballer. As far as I can recall he has only had a few minutes off the bench here and there, but when I have seen him he has displayed a good football brain with a eye for a pass. Weight is not an issue as long as he fit - and we don't know his fitness levels, so all the abuse given to him for weight issues are off target. Look at Luke Shaw...not slim but in the England squad. He could be a very useful squad asset over the last 10 games of the season.

He should be given one last chance. If he can’t prove his fitness, and impact on the game, then he should be moved on in the summer. Hopefully he can impact the games and help us stay in league one.
His size isn’t the issue to me it’s his fitness levels. Can remember the Sheffield game when he came on and he was puffing all over the place after only a few minutes.

I guess its good to have options although I really can't see Josh having any influence on our survival or not.

The times I've seen him he's impressed me with his willingness to try things, they dont always come off but he still wants the ball and is prepared to look to play that killer pass. His fitness is obviously an issue but to me it's more his injury record rather than his body shape. I'm not sure he'll have time to make any impact on the remainder of this season but assuming he's under contract and with a full pre season I'd like to see what Barton can get out of him

What's the betting he'll be back just to coincide in same time as the pasty huts opening back up?
