Jock 1st for me, then maybe Joner and then Jason Perry. I only really remember from the Twerton era although I started watching Rovers from the last season at Eastville. I wouldnt fancy going toe-to-toe with young Broadbent though!!

Jock was known as a bit of a hard man but he wasn’t the biggest of blokes and was just a bit of a dirty bastard really ..... loved him though ! Joner was a tough little bugger . I’m not sure we’ve really had any out & out tough guys in my time watching ( late 70’s onwards ) , maybe there were others before my time ?

I recall Archie Stevens being a bit of a hard man, but that may just be me misremembering.
Certainly Ian Alexander, Andy Gurney had the potential for the red mist to decend.

Neither Vaughan Jones or Dave Pritchard ever pulled out of a tackle.

What a disappointing programme that was - only aimed at the current Premiership obsessed viewers.
The real hard men were usually midfielders in the thick of the battle who could dish it out and take it - not fullbacks who could tackle from behind on an easy target like the 9 stone wingers they were marking.
So, with that in mind it's got to be the players who never pulled out of a tackle and won the 50/50 balls - in my day it was Frankie Prince.
Brian Godfrey was hard as nails and constructive as well. Hardest player I saw playing against Rovers was Bruce Rioch.

Very annoying when they talk about goal scoring records when the likes of Greaves, Dixie, Dean, Lofthouse, Rush and many others just get air brushed from history. Outside of the prem era you’d have to include Mick Harford, Billy Whitehurst and Terry Hurlock. Rovers hard men in my time watching Rovers were probably Pritchard, Jock and Robbie Turner.

They were some battles back then but they just got up "dusted themselves down" (that seems to be the phrase just for losing these days!) and got on with it. I think these days so many injury themselves by not tackling properly or half-heartedly.

From my favourite era Frankie Prince by a country mile, but as previously mentioned Alex Munro wasn't afraid to put it about. Another one I recall being hard as nails was Wilf Smith, whose challenges were never for the faint-hearted. Stuart Taylor had the potential and size to be a 'hard man' but he was too much of a gentle giant. Larry Lloyd of course obtained a bit of a reputation after he left Rovers, but he was learning his trade before Bill Shankly came calling. And yes, Brian Godfrey has to be up there too.

Three hardest tacking players at Rovers I've seen are Alex Munro , Doug Hillard & Brian Godfrey.

Conrad Logan had a bit of madness behind his eyes.
Dave Savage had razor blades for elbows and even the toughest of men have choked on Stuart Sinclair’s beard.

Brian Williams, left back in early 80s, wasn`t terribly accomodating to any winger who tried to take the ball past him.

Frankie prince in those rugby boots, Jason perry, jock and Ronnie Mauge I think I remember an article on those boots. Normal football boots had six interchangeable studs, four in the front and two at the back. Prince’s rugby boots had an extra long stud at the front and the leather came up above his ankle. On reflection, I would say that opposing players were more frightened of the boots than Frankie. Mind you, he could play as well.
