Archie Stephens played up front on his own against Millwall and their 2 centre halves spent the game punching him on the back of the head and he appeared oblivious to it . i think of this when people moan about todays refs .

Wayne Jones was kicked between the legs and the referee gave a dropped ball . The lad that went up for them was the lad who had kicked wayne . Alex Munro pushed players out of the way to be our player and with the crowd chanting its their number 4 Alex he ignored the ball and just kicked him in the knee and received a red card .

Rovers were home to Blackburn Rovers and winning by one goal when they had a corner . The ball boy started to run for the ball and our keeper told him to slow down but he overdid it . Their winger ran up to the ball boy snatched the ball and shoved him so hard he went flying . Frankie Prince ran to their winger shoved him and dropped on to his chest and punched him several times , the referee waited until he'd finished and restarted the game with the corner saying nothing to Frankie . The ref was obviously as annoyed with the winger as the crowd.

For those that can remember, Jackie Pitt often squared up to Peacock during local derbies.

I suppose from the last couple of years only Millwall Tone comes close to being 'hard' as opposed to dirty or niggly which a lot of players are these days. I remember one match at Shrewsbury when one impressionable Shrewsbury youth decided to push Tone in the back after a bit of a melee - we all waited for a physical response but it only resulted in a glare which put the fear of God into the player for the rest of the match.

As a child of Twerton it is Jock first, the test nowhere.

Jock 1st for me, then maybe Joner and then Jason Perry. I only really remember from the Twerton era although I started watching Rovers from the last season at Eastville. I wouldnt fancy going toe-to-toe with young Broadbent though!! Jock was known as a bit of a hard man but he wasn’t the biggest of blokes and was just a bit of a dirty bastard really ..... loved him though ! Joner was a tough little bugger . I’m not sure we’ve really had any out & out tough guys in my time watching ( late 70’s onwards ) , maybe there were others before my time ? miss the way jockey just used to usher the city wingers of the pitch.

Jock was the first for me. I think since then we had David Pritchard, Ronnie Mauge, and Marcus Bignott who as a unit were nicknamed “The Dogs” if I remember correctly? Same squad had Mark Foran that was happy to stick a header on anything. Andy Rammell was another that didn’t shy away from a tackle. I absolutely would place Aarron Lescott in that category. Always the first in when there was a flare up. Last one that I remember being coming in and being a hard bastard was when we took Jean-Paul Kalala from Yeovil. My favourite was probably Aarron Lescott, was baffled by the decision to release him and also the one releasing Foran and Che Wilson at the time and still annoys me that we did so now! 🤣

Nobody got past Jack Pitt when he played at right half and Alfie Biggs could certainly terrorise defenders.
