With no signings to think about was just wondering how much Jed Ward was worth, called up by England under 19 s, see Villa have signed another of our young players with compensation paid.
I think we should play him next season, if he is as good as people say, Cheltenham have played young goalkeepers before Butland etc in League 2.

Does anyone know how tall he is ? I seem to remember reading that he doesn’t fit the modern goalkeepers trend to be at least 6’2””

Honestly what chance do lower league clubs have of making their academies pay, when the vultures from the Prem hoover up every sniff of a talent for a snip under the EPPP?

Compo is pocket change for them (if that!!). No opportunity to play them either to increase their value. Little clubs get f**ked over as with everything else in football today

I still cannot quite believe how few people seem to either not know or not care or not understand the implications of the EPPP for lower league football. There's all this talk of B teams, ESL and all that crap, but the EPPP was a major cog in the wheel of driving an almost insurmountable wedge between the elite clubs and the lower leagues.

Jed Ward signed a professional deal in February. He looks about the same height as Will Puddy, who was ridiculed for his height (5ft11?), right now.

This is the very reason that there is no point whatsoever in the smaller clubs running Acadamies. We may as well just sign the best available p-layers each season on free transfers. The EFL should be strung up for the rules they come up with. The game revolves around the top 6 in the Premiership and with all the money they get compared with anybody else is it hardly surprising that most clubs are struggling.

You’re correct Jomo but istr after another World Cup failure that the need for “top clubs” to control training and develop young England players was a reason given in the earlier 2000s for the system as it is today. And with the increased number of younger, talented players available for England now I don’t think the needs of clubs like ours is even on the FA or PL agenda to change it. Its very sad and whilst it may have produced a good number of England players it doesn’t take account of the thousands of players who’ve never had an opportunity to develop and have been lost through lack of real opportunity. Very sad. UTG!

The really benefit is for the Premier League clubs to be legitimised in trawling and hoarding talent and ultimately making more money through sales of both the successes and the "failures" for want of a better word. It wouldn't even bother me as much if the compensation package was actually enough to cover the cost of running these academies.

Imay be wrong but didn’t the EFL clubs vote strongly in favour of the EPPP?
Weren’t they thrown a few quid as an incentive to do so?

They also voted in favour of the B team introduction into the EFL Trophy. It's nothing more than bribery in my eyes. Screw over the lower league clubs to such an extent that they are powerless to resist financial incentives for schemes that are against their best interests.

But I remember some earnest conversations about the issue following some epic national failure to win a football match leading to it being a given reason for the change. In the end they, the PL, control nearly all the resources in the form of players and decide where they go, when they go, even when they know they will never pick the player for their first team. They have taken control of the market and there’s little lower league clubs can do about it. UTG!

Pub quizz alleged fact: the etymology of the verb “to canter” comes from the preferred speed that pilgrims would ride their horses to Canterbury, being more comfortable than a trot or a gallop over a long distance.
