I thought the unknown youngsters did better than the known ones and would seek a loan move for Tomlinson and Hargeaves. Probably Ayunga as well. Westbrook for me has no great endeavour about him to do anything. He has been the biggest disappointment for me over what I thought we were getting. Westbrook is a really strange one for me, so hard to describe him as any particular type. Despite pressing rarely tackles, has obvious composure and technique but doesn’t thread enough through balls for me. Is that down to the forwards not finding space or his lack of vision. His set pieces can be deadly but not consistent enough. Is he suited to league two football? Not sure but I guess we have to trust Barton’s knowledge of the game and what he sees. Agree with all this. Also don’t think he’s suited to playing where he did today (as part of a midfield two). Not combative or defensively disciplined enough. Either needs to be given a free-ish role in a midfield three or play as one of the two attacking midfielders behind the striker in a 3-4-3, IMO.

1 goal from open play Vs Melksham, Barnet & Plymouth? I know it's friendlies and all, but it sounds like we have the same problems as last year...

Very little attacking threat .. was it one shot on target other than the penalty and that was the 88th minute! Westbrooke is not the answer to linking the play - hopefully Sam Findlay will be.

Very rigid 3 4 3. No where for the wing backs to advance into as the two wide men just hung out wide. Think we need to be more fluid upfront, creating space.
When Westbrooke came off Barton seemed to be making motions that looked like play it into the channels earlier, but that's a guess by me.
Not seeing anything inspirational in terms of tactics today.
May suggest we looked better pre season last year.

Argyle hardly peppered our goal. From memory our keeper had one save to make and theirs did as well.

Not seeing anything inspirational in terms of tactics today. Not just today, I've still no idea Barton wants us to do. He played 4231 a lot and 343 sometimes, neither look particularly convincing though I do think he's signed the right positions for those styles - hoping to be proven wrong about it all.

Sounds like a useful workout in what i assume were extremely tough conditions, good preparation for the season ahead.

Didn't watch on i follow (too nice in the sun) although I would have gone if not behind closed doors when it would have been the best of both worlds! Saw this on argyle forum - for those that did see it is this fair comment? " Defence looks more robust It has to be said. But should have done better against a mediocre Rovers side really.
Their constant aimless long balls must be a worry for them. Early days but I can’t see them threatening for League Two promotion".

We did play a lot of long balls and look a bit mediocre today, but still got the likes of Anssi, Rodman, Nicholson, Coutts, Finley and Thomas to strengthen the side eventually. Hopefully at some point we will be signing another striker too.

As I said earlier they were hardly all over us and we played mainly a side of young kids in the second half.

And we havent seen our 2 best central midfielders yet! Coutts and Finley but I must say I hope we play with a back 4 as defensively I dont like the three at the back.

Not much in the way of fireworks, but still an interesting game - Anderton looks a solid citizen, not sure about Taylor I would have thought Kilgour would be a better bet, but interestingly enough he didn't play, and Joey never mentioned him after the match. Anderson and Collins both had moments when they appeared to have something extra about them, and Hughes looks like he can read a game.

Hanlan is the only first team player that Barton didn't explain the absence of, would be interesting to know why.

Hopefully it’s not the barn door as our strikers usually miss that.
