Would be a good point this, hopefully we can hold on. Already 18 months ahead?

Good workout, more minutes in the legs of the players, that’s the most important thing at this stage. 1-1 is a good result against a team in the division above, not that results matter a great deal.
Of the new signings, I thought Anderton looked decent and Hughes looked a commanding, experienced defender which is what we sorely lacked last season. Didn’t see an awful lot of Anderson or Clarke but they looked good when they had the ball.
Trialist keeper impressed me with his kicking and the way he organised the defence, hope we give him another game.
Youngsters wise, was impressed by Budd and Hoole. Budd played some really good balls and Hoole looked comfortable up against more senior Plymouth pros. Be interesting to track the development of Langlais, only 16 but already looks like he’s got the physical presence to play men’s football already.

I thought they were plenty of positives. Defence looks stronger already. We didn’t look like we were going to concede with every opposition attack for one. And that’s with a trialist keeper…
By the way, a gentle reminder to all forumites that we banned the word ‘gel’ back in 2011… Buckle up everyone.

Good work out for a very new squad - Many encouraging signs, especially in defense- Would love a midfield player capable of putting a foot on the ball and steadying play when we are looking to attack and, of course, a striker who is in and around the 6 yard box. A lot of our attempts on goal were via the wings and I would love to see us mix it up with play through the middle We have yet to see Coutts and Findlay in midfield.

We started to look more threatening and created more with Harvey Saunders on. Need a solid RB though as all their best moves came down that side (yes I know Mayor is decent..)

He did. If he is young enough he is good enough. No need in my opinion to worry about a right back . A no.9 is what we need and nothing else as far as I see it.

If we're going play wing backs I'd definitely agree with you especially as Anderson can play there as well. Only issue I'd have is whether we need a more defensively minded player to give us the option of playing a 4 ?

I think they would both add to the side fielded today. I thought we were sound defensively. Anderton and Hughes looked very solid. I thought Collins looked good, but we were a bit starved of possession through the middle. I'm not a huge fan of 20 passes across the back line only to end up with pumping the ball forward - but a good run out overall. It'll be interesting to see how many of the youngsters break through to play in the first team this season, and no-one let themselves down today.

Westbrook seems to have replaced Upson in playing his passes either backwards or sideways. What does Joey see in him! He has to have someone to pass too! He is meant to be a creative player, I saw no sign of that.

Lots of positives from todays game and I thought when on Anderson looked very good. Thought all the youngsters did well. I know the Centre forward needs the right service but it only re-enforced my opinion today that we desperately need an experienced one. Over to you Joey.

It's pretty hot. Not exactly blood and thunder football weather.

I thought the unknown youngsters did better than the known ones and would seek a loan move for Tomlinson and Hargeaves. Probably Ayunga as well. Westbrook for me has no great endeavour about him to do anything. He has been the biggest disappointment for me over what I thought we were getting.

Westbrook is a really strange one for me, so hard to describe him as any particular type. Despite pressing rarely tackles, has obvious composure and technique but doesn’t thread enough through balls for me. Is that down to the forwards not finding space or his lack of vision. His set pieces can be deadly but not consistent enough. Is he suited to league two football? Not sure but I guess we have to trust Barton’s knowledge of the game and what he sees.
