So yesterday was my first look at our players this season and I would firstly say that this was no day to play football- far too hot and the chances of seeing a good match with so many new players being bedded in and that heat in the first week was hardly idea. Anyway that said this is my thoughts
Goalkeeper Trialist- Looked pretty commanding and a couple of decent saves.Probably the right age (mid 30s) for what we need as it is not going to be easy to get an experienced keeper in knowing that the no 1 is probably the best keeper in League 2. We know he will probably have to play a min im um of 6-8 games so on that basis maybe he could be the one.
Hughes- Very impressed and could be Tony Craig mark 2 or should I say Mark Hughes no 1. Did everything you would expect from the main centre half, looked solid and commanding.
Taylor- Only 19 and on l,oan from Stoke . They have high hopes from him and I was pretty impressed overall. Didn't really do muchh wrong and with his height 6ft 5 he didn't disappoint and particularly in the first half he was involved a lot. Some well overhit clearances but generally sound on the ball and a good prospect. I have the feeling he will give Kilgour a run for a starting place.
Anderton- Played as the third centre half in a back three and did pretty well. Definitely a more solid look defensively than Leahy and seemed to be confident in possession but also looked like he would be a solid left back if p0layed in a back 4.
Andersen- Apart from giving away a needless penalty to present Plymouth with their goal he was probably my pick of the new boys-speedy and willing to take a player on and was involved in our best move in the first half. Definite starter on the right for me. As he has only been with us a week he did well to get through 45 minutes.
Grant- Typical Grant display-gritty and hard working and obviously more than capable of playing in League 2 and performing well but could well lose out to Coutts on the first game.
Westbrooke- Didn't look like he particularly wanted to be out there and certainly not a player you want to play deep because there is no point in a defender giving him the ball and he gives it straight back to them. Dead balls he took were similar to last season-wasted. He has the ability but I just don't see him being with us by the time Mansfield comes around and I won't be too disappointed.
Clarke- Played left wing back and did ok. Nothing more nothing less but as he has only been with us a week I am sure there is better to come as he has played in the Championship.
Spense- Was disappointed with his contribution but didn't really get a chance to impress because we didn't really attack enough through the midfield and it was mainly a long boot game which I don't think suited him. Look forward to seeing him again and I am sure he will give a better account of himself.
Collins- put the penalty away well but like the rest of our attackers in the first half there was no understanding between them and the midfield or themselves. I would like to see him gettin g into the penalty area but that was a rare occurence yesterday.
Ayunga- Did nothing to impress for a place in the starting team as spent the entire half isolated and when he did get the ball he tended to lose it. Was not surprised that he went off at half time. He is definitely not the leader of an attack and was not at all helped by the heat out there.A thankless tasdk feeding off mainly overhit passes.
Saunders- Half time replacement up top.The pick of the attackers overall as was a willing runner and looked to have pace and a fair amount of skill. Won the penalty straight away and if I had to describe him I would hope he would be a fit version of Daley.
Hargreaves- Came on second half and did ok but nothing to make me think he will make the squad of 20.
Tomlinson- Same as Hargreaves and think they will be both overtaken by the other young players who came on.
Hoole= Came on at right back and did not disappoint. the best of our yougsters that appeared and I would not be surprised to see him making the bench this season.
Bubb, Langlais- Both did themselves no harm at all- Took me about 15 minutes before I realised that the tall chap up front was Langlais and not Ayunga- He is certainly a well built 16 year old and hope our coaches can do something with him. Bubb showed a confidence on the ball and like Hoole impressed me.
Overall the plusses for me was that in the heat we kept going, the defence looked solid but I am happier with a solid back four as we do get caught out wide with the three, there were no real bad individual errors in defence throughout.
My final 20 would be
1.Annsi
2. Trialist GK possibly
3, Hughes
4. Kilgour
5. Anderton
6.Anderson
7. Clarke
8.Grant
9.Collins
10. Saunders
11.Coutts
12. Finley
13. Rodman
14.Nicholson
15.Hanlon
16.Thomas
17. New Right Back
18. New striker
19. One of Baldwin, Harries
20 Possibly Barratt
This is on the understanding that Spense and Taylor do not need to be named due to age.
Loan out- Hargreaves, Tomlinson, Mehew,Liddell,Walker
Transfer- Westbrooke and one of Baldwin and Harries.
