It is very easy to be critical after defeat but not to bother to comment after a good display and result. This is fully in evidence by the number of posts after saturdays defeat compared to number of posts after last nights win. Then there is the usual Oldham are terrible and certainties to go down and here you have the mindset of a football supporter. Lets be honest Stevenage were no better on Saturday and we looked awful and in the same vein I would say that we were very good last night and our PERFORMANCE especially in the first half made Oldham look awful. Had we come off 4-0 at half time it would have been a fair reflection of the play and they would probably have got off lightly aided by another inept refereeing performance Yes they have lost their first three league games and are bottom but if you look at those games- 0-1 at home to Newport with Newport scoring an 88th minute winner against the run of play and 1-2 away at Bradford with a 96th minute penalty denying them a draw. Who beat Stevenage last night 4-1? That same Bradford City team.
So perhaps they are not as awful as people are saying and perhaps it was more a case of our attacking play and pace and movement of our players tearing them apart? It will be interesting now to see if this was a one off or the signs of much better things to come. So many players impressed me last night and not even a poor second half in comparison to the first can hide my pleasure of seeing the possibility of something special with the performances of Saunders, Collins, Finley, Anderson and Rodman all showing great flair and ability,
One quote from a Rovers supporter in this thread who I will not name because I cannot believe the stupidness of the statement and can only assume he is joking or perhaps so old that he has fallen asleep in most of the games he has seen!!- " The standard of the first half of the game was the worst I think I have seen in 60 years of watching professional football!" and I think this sums up just how little credit some are willing to give to the team. All i can say is if that was the worst he has seen then for one he could not have been at either of the previous home games this season for starters!! I would suggest he best not follow football if that is the case because you aren't going to get many better performances over 45 minutes!! Roll on saturday now and lets hope we can see 90 minutes of the worst standard he has seen in 60 years.

You sure he wasn't taking about the refereeing as to say that about our performance would be sheer madness?!

Where’s the player ratings Steve? Good post.
Take 5 of the best 6 midfield/forward players from any team and they would struggle. People couldn’t seem to grasp that before throwing a tantrum two games into the season. Suprise suprise, as they come back we are improving. Those players still aren’t fit, so another 3-4 weeks patience will be needed.

And had we come off 4-0 up at half time and Oldham were a beaten team, who's to say it mightn't have been 6,7,8 by the end? It wasn't perfect but clearly it's starting to come together, you can see what the team could be.

We were decent enough for the first half but Oldham were the worst team I’ve seen since national league.
That said it is a building block that we can hopefully build on.

Safe to say that, mentally, that was very much needed. Some of our players have ever only known negativity and criticism (not unjustly) while with us. It doesn’t even bare thinking about had we lost..

With everyone becoming available Barton has interesting calls to make in terms of team selection.

79 sent me a link to the Oldham forum owtb.co.uk. It looked like I was reading GasChat for the last 18 months for the most of it but this stood out
Quote from daniel
"These have easily been the best side I've seen this season"
but he also went on to say
"but by god they are cheating bast'rds! When you see their boss you are not surprised though, nasty small man"

Interesting point about the amount of posts after a defeat compared to a win.
I wonder whether it's simply because after a defeat there is a lot of debate about whee it all went wrong and arguements that fill a few pages about JB.
After a win and good performance we're all pretty much in agreement and therefore one post expressing your delight / relief is enough.
Certainly was much more encouraging last night, particularly first half.
My only slight reservation is, did Oldham work out how to stop us at half time when they changed shape and made a double substitution? After being completely dominant for the first 45, I'd say Oldham had slightly the better of the better of the second half. Hopefully just a case of many players still working on their fitness having missed a lot of pre season.
Either way, great to get a win and it was deserved. Should lift morale and build confidence.
Some interesting decisions for JB soon.
1) Does he bring Jaakkola back? Personally I wouldn't. 2) Does he bring Coutts back? I think it's likely. If so, who misses out? 3) Is Nicholson ready to start? If so, who do you leave out? When fit, I think Nicholson has to play. 4) Does he bring Pitman in? Personally, I don't think he looks fit enough but he is Johnny-on-the-spot. If he does start, who misses out? 5) Is Hanlan staying or not? If so, does he start? If not, what typre of striker do we need to replace him? 6) Do we need to replace Westbrooke if he leaves? 7) Anderson looked good at left wing back. Do we need another / cover?

One Andy Lochhead comes to mind, playing for a certain Oldham Athletic, knocking a goalkeeper senseless. So you'll forgive me if I treat your comment with a certain amount of derision.

As Coutts stupidity cost us at least a point first game why should he come straight back? Unless another change in formation or positions then would say Grant would be the one he would replace, does he deserve to be dropped? Nicholson not fully fit yet therefore who know where we are in a couple of weeks regarding fitness, form, suspensions. If Anderson not fit then who comes in there? When will Clarke be fit again?
Interesting "problems"

It's always very hard to judge the standard of the opposition after a game. Yes Oldham looked poor but was that because of our level of performance? How many times have we played "so say" poor teams and lost? It's very easy to get dragged down to a poor teams level, especially in a team lacking confidence. So I will take it at face value, a very good win and a good attacking first half against a team that probably fancied their chances against us!

Surely got to stick with the same team if fit. Can't drop Finley or Grant for Coutts IMO (maybe don't let us down again captain!). Loving all the Grant support, not many of us were backing him last season. Nicholson and Pitman from the bench until they are fit.

I actually thought the first half was oe of the best performances I have seen from the Gas for a couple of years. What Pitman was doing when he came on is a bit of a mystery, he hobbled more than ran and is clearly not 100% fit. I limped home with my aged mind and body and my old brain which is full to capacity with 63 seasons of memories. Who were we playing? ??

Notwithstanding this I didn't see any cheating behaviour by us anyway, Collins was booked for a dive when he was still on his feet, we had numerous penalty appeals waved away by a poor ref and Oldham spent half of the game time wasting!

So guessing that's what might happen as other players return? Although, thought Grant had a good game yesterday in midfield.

He made me chuckle last night when a ball was put into the left channel, he and Nicholson were chasing for it from slightly different directions, Pitman was closer than Nicholson but he waved at Nicholson to chase it instead of himself!
