I know many won't care, but after the sh** I would say Swindon are our next biggest rival today. There is a real dislike there from over the years, even tho it used to be with Cardiff.
They like us have Championship potential if they got there sh** together and have untapped potential. But the county ground is a more modern looking arena then the Mem and also slightly bigger, yet I do prefer our old girl that we call the Mem over what they have at the CG as it's a dull dump, yet the Mem is full of charm and Character. The Mem is sh** but the County ground is as bad also.
But I was looking on Google earlier and saw the area size around County ground compard to what we have at the Mem.They could build a 30k plus stadium there if they could buy the land around it, while we have pure house's around us in BS7 so if we developed we could only get to say 20k..?
Do they own the CG or is it still council owed?
I know they have dodged the bullet many times due to mishandling of financing, and have cheated there way to stay alive, while we have moved away from our city, to stay in business yet are still in the same position as them dispite playing a fair game.
How do you compare our two clubs and stadiums of today...
I would say say they have a better history, we have a bigger fan base and potential. We have a great owner yet he has no idea how how to run a club and they are always a financial mess..

I feel a bit apathetical towards Swindon to be honest. Yes, we’re close geographically and on a level playing field at the minute and yes I was mildly cheesed off a couple of years ago by being charged for a replay of a game I’d already paid and got soaking wet for. However I don’t feel any intense rivalry with them. I think if you’d ask a Swindon fan which Bristol club they disliked more they’d probably say City rather than us.
For me we only have one big rivalry and that’s with City, regardless of the comparative fortunes between the two clubs.

Swindon are only worried about Oxford. It’s just a relatively close game , nothing more.

Couldn’t care about any of the other “local” clubs tbh. City are still our main rivals and likely will be until they hit the prem, which can’t be too far away now.
Once they hit the Prem they won’t even think about us and it’ll be a bit like Notts Forest/County.
Sure there’s a bit more bite to a game vs Swindon, Oxford etc but wouldn’t class either as rivals and nothing like a Bristol derby.

Only one rival, albeit that's on ice due to our failure to keep up.
No others as far as I am concerned, it's just manufactured rivalry to build up interest.

I agree. It will always be City for us and Us for them dispite what they say and how big the gap is. My main Question was comparing Us and Swindon as clubs which are both punching below our potential and development. IMHO, Swindon are of course a huge local rival as there is alot of history there. But it's very much 2nd fiddle to Us vs City and Swindon Vs Oxford.

Well considering they have played in the premier league and beat Arsenal to win the league cup at Wembley I don’t think they are comparable other than local to us and been equally crap recently. The sh** will always be our main and only proper rival

Fake rivalries are definitely part of the narrative nowadays. We (Pompey), were originally due to be on Sky yesterday as our game against Plymouth fell on an international weekend. It's been televised a few times over the past few years, and branded the 'Dockyard Derby'. While it's true there was a bit of a rivalry between the two ports in the past the football rivalry was never strong, certainly on this side, apart from a couple of years in L2 where we were battling in the top part of the table and there were one or two acrimonious matches (i.e. rivalry about the football rather than any deep-rooted disdain).
Ultimately the derby tag is ridiculous as it takes about 3.5 hours to drive to Plymouth from Portsmouth - probably double that on a bank holiday weekend as you'll almost certainly get stuck in tailbacks caused by an overturned caravan. Like you, we have one derby match.

The "Dockyard Derby" was precisely the one I was thinking of, although not being a supporter of either I wasn't totally sure whether there was anything in it. Another is 'West Country Derby' with Plymouth, as many have pointed out, we are nearer Midlands teams than Plymouth. For me, a genuine Derby would be one that involves "bragging rights" in work after a game. Aside from the established teams like Liverpool or Man Utd, I'm only likely to work with City fans. Even Newport, FGR, Yeovil or Cheltenham never felt like a rival in the same way.

Ours is with the nearest city - I'm not a qualified historian but suspect royal vs. merchant navy also comes in to it a bit.
I do think alternative rivalries can develop due to circumstance and, despite loathing the 'Sky' false hyping of derby matches, a decent bit of needle between fans, in compact grounds like those our teams play in, takes some beating.

My opening point wasn't about Swindon being even considered being close to City as rivals. But just because they are not from Bristol doesn't mean there isn't dislike between our clubs and comparison.
My main question was how our clubs match up and stadiums, given that they are our main rivals at this level.

We have the distance derby here. Wellington Phoenix v Perth Glory. 5,300 kms, Coach 1 does have a toilet though.

As for Swindon. Meh. Bit of a Jolly , nothing more. Newport would be our Derby ATM.

I always feel like us and And Oxford has had the most intensity in recent years but obviously we're not in the same league now.

Swindon for me aren’t any more a rival for us than what Forest Green or Newport are. I would say I dislike Wycombe or Notts County more than I do Swindon.
I don’t get why the media try to brandish rivalries when there isn’t really one.
They tried to make one out of Plymouth which is a club 100 or so miles away, probably the same distance as Walsall, it’s ridiculous.

I like the matches where there is more of a "bite". If that is drummed up by the media then so be it, could criticise the media for a lot of things but that is not one of them.

Aside from The Sheeds, I feel no more dislike for any other local clubs than any other clubs. Swindon are a generally annoying club due to their perpetual boom and bust style of managing at board level, but I don't feel they're a "rival". I find FGR quite annoying as well, because of their delusions of grandeur, but again I have similar feelings towards the likes of Salford and Fleetwood.
