Just saw that England legend Pearce features in the video of the new Stranglers single, This Song.
Just imagine if Rovers signed him.
This almost came true as Bobby Gould watched him playing for Wealdstone against Bath at Twerton in 1986 after a recommendation.
I doubt we had the money, but when BG went to Coventry in May 1987 he soon picked him up.
Imagine having Psycho and Jockey as full backs. Carnage for wingers!

"There are players out there who have not been found yet. I remember asking Brian Eastick, our youth team coach, who was the best left-back he knew of? He said Stuart Pearce, of Wealdstone, without blinking an eye. It so happened that Wealdstone were away to Yeovil that night. I phoned Marge, my wife, who was still living in Portishead due to not getting our two sons into schools in the Coventry area, to say I would pick her up on the way through to Yeovil. We took our seats in the directors’ box at the old Huish ground, which had a dramatic slope on it, and in the first seven minutes this aggressive blond-haired number three had tackled the Yeovil number seven so hard he nearly landed in my lap! “That’s it,” I said to Marge, “we’re off at half-time, I have seen enough.” The rest is history We paid £22,500 for Stuart Pearce and Mr Clough paid well over £400,000." www.coventrytelegraph.net/sport/football/football-news/solid-gould-im-envious-steven-3013596

A good night though and I think the tie we earned from coming back from 3-1 to beat city Edit: see I’ve been beaten to it with a more informative reply!

Oh, don't mention Sheringham.... I was at the Millwall game when he scored that late free kick still a 1-1 away draw at tier two is the stuff of dreams these days.... I thought he went to spurs from Millwall? Edit... Just checked and yeah, he was at forest for only that one season....

I remember seeing The Stranglers at the academy, when new singer Baz Warne changed the lyrics to Down in the Sewer to "There are a lot of worse places to be, like Ashton Gate on a Saturday, watching those sad bast***s".
I say new singer, but he has been with the band longer than Cornwall - where does the time go?

One minute Pearce was making a last ditch tackle, next minute he was charging through us. He was an absolute machine, powerful, strong and never stopped running. Glad I got the chance to see him play live. One of the best full backs in my time.

I saw Rovers league cup game at forest in the early 90's.... Not sure if he played though.... Anyone? I was there too - Didnt we have county the same week ? I'm sure I remember going to Nottingham twice that season - Got a coach trip with a load of Banjo Island lads - It was a riot - We stopped for a pint in Gloucester I think and stayed so long that we were almost late to the game. Pretty sure some drunk local got on the coach and came with us
