There are several glass ceilings throughout the football pyramid, the Prem seems to be a closed shop in practice for most outside the top 25ish teams. The likes of Brentford will be even fewer, though not impossible.Apart from a cameo appearance to say we'd done it once, not sure I'd want to chase that pipedream anyway. Give me a decent stadium (or even just a couple of new stands) and yo-yoing between Championship and L1. We've an awful long way to go to get there though, even for that modest target. No, it’s not impossible. I never thought we’d see another Wimbledon but we have. We’ve had 2 over the past 6/7 years. AFC Bournemouth and now Brentford. Both were recently in League 1 and got promotion to the Championship and with money and being well run, got to the PL. So it’s an achievable aim but atm BRFC are light years away from doing that because it seems we lack leadership and leaders and appear to be not run very well. A new ground is needed yet we seem to be further away from that as we’ve ever been. Money is important but so is the ability to spend it wisely. UTG! if Bournemouth didnt go up when they did they would not exist now. Broke every rule to get promoted. If they dont go.up this season they will be below us in two years

UTG! if Bournemouth didnt go up when they did they would not exist now. Broke every rule to get promoted. If they dont go.up this season they will be below us in two years I was making the point, in response to Stuart, that getting to the PL is not impossible though clearly very difficult. AFCB and Brentford have done that, similar to Wimbledon 30 years ago. If Bournemouth hadn’t gone up when they did they would still exist imo but you may be right. But they did go up so not sure what relevance it is. Had we not returned in ‘15 we might have been in difficulty as many have said. But we did so we thrived for a few years. It’s a similar argument but not really relevant. As for if they don’t go up this time, well you may be right. After all the PL parachute payments will run out at end of next season so they certainly need to go up asap. And they’re looking good and Parker looks a good manager with players playing well for him. Either way I doubt very much if we’ll be above them in two years if they stay in the Championship at the end of this season. I’d love you to be right but to think in two years we’ll be above them is, to be polite, unlikely! UTG! ps. From memory, without checking, they broke one rule and were fined £4.5m, not every rule. But I get the point you’re making. But I’d say they had an owner who spent his wealth wisely. If only....

Bournemouth 2014/15. Allowed loss was £6m, actual loss was £38.3m. The fine was originally £7.6m (reduced to £4.75m) and promotion to the Premiership was worth over £100m......
You've got to speculate cheat to accumulate....

They were one of many to do the same. But let’s face it we’re all just a slight bit jealous of what they did and still do when they used to be one of our main rivals. Jealousy and frustration about the comparison makes it all worse. UTG!

Evolution not revolution remember More like devolution. The only improvement so far is the training ground, and most other clubs already have one of those

I think the football played to get you promotion will not necessarily be good enough to survive in the higher league. You have to adapt ,prob with a nucleus of new players and it can take time. Wycombe were promoted by default but still gave a good account of themselves and came within a whisker of surviving. Coventry were by far the best footballing side in our league when they got promotion but they were also street wise enough to get promotion, they have adapted well after a slow start and there fluent style is well suited to the championship, in fact they totally outplayed City in there first game back despite losing in the end. The likes of Bournemouth ,Swansea, got promoted playing with style and with additions adapted quite comfortably to the Prem for a few seasons but you have to keep evolving, you can't stand still. Think the vision Rovers had when BG took over was admirable for the higher leagues but we had to get there first which required a different mindset and different approach, a bit of GC in the mix would have helped, guess in the end you have to adapt to the new challenges of the higher leagues even if that means dismantling what got you there.

The only improvement so far is the training ground, and most other clubs already have one of those …but we didn’t have one, so it is still progress and moving the club forward. It’s not WAQ’s fault that we didn’t have a training ground and he has ameliorated the situation.

I really am not trying to be negative here but I can't ever see a time where we will ever compete in the Championship, let alone reach the Prem. The money being thrown around in the Championship for just squad players who ain't even key players is ridiculous. I can't see us spending £1 million on players let alone that much on a single player. Our highest paid fee paid was for Andy Tilson back in the early 90's. I am not sure if we broke that amount for Tom Nichols as seen different amounts be touted around, but you would think 30 years later that we would have broke that record fee by now. Of course we could get by on free transfers but I can't see us climbing the league and competing at Championship level on free transfers. Money will have to be spent on quality and that won't be cheap and I just can't see our club ever doing that. I did think for a time when BG came that there was a chance of this happening as I thought the idea of bring in young talent and sell off for good money could be the start of something to come like a Brighton or Brentford. But that idea has long gone and we are now bringing in players past their sell by date who are probably looking for their last well paid contract without any care whatsoever. of course it is many other clubs have done it but it does take a lot of investment on and off the pitch
