We have made three failed appointments in quick succession. A newbie keen on tactical periodisation, a safe pair of hands (and Gashead), and a celebrity narcissist. Looking at their records before (after, in the case of BG) they were all half decent and should have had enough to keep us up. The only common denominator in the respective failures of an eclectic bunch is BRFC.
So, what would have helped? We had the idea to create a DNA within the club, get the first team playing a certain way, and move players through the ranks playing that way. At the first sign of difficulty that agenda was set fire to, poured water on, shredded, and binned.
Perhaps a DoF could help. Some elder statesman of the game, who won't take sh**, who might have more of a say on team affairs than a manager might like, who might stick his nose in where it's not wanted occasionally. Someone who could keep an eye on the bigger, broader picture, and steer the club in a general direction instead of having hopeful captains jump aboard every few months, spinning the wheel.
I genuinely don't know if this would be good. It would restrict a lot of our managerial appointments (but that might be a good thing) and we might lose the opportunity to sign genuinely decent managers, maybe, but otoh it might keep things stable, consistent, and even sane.

Swansea had a model and stuck to it with all their appointments from days in bottom division. Looks successful with more promotions than relegations.

I believed in the concept championed led by BG but i agree he should have had some help in what was his first managers job. A DOF would have been ideal to help BG but is in itself not an easy role to play. You have to have clear understanding in each others role, Lennie was brilliant in the role with Rovers and has been elsewhere, one of those positions where you don't know what they do until they are no longer there, as PT(1) found out. There are not that many about who could fulfil the role. Ollie? would love to think so but who can honestly believe he could control his passion and not keep sticking his nose in where not wanted?!

Ollie would not make a DOF, too hands on. Pulis may have been a good foil for Garner, given his dour approach.
