The link between the average age of the playing squad of a club and the overall performance of that team is frequently suggested as a causal factor of achievement and league position.
It has often been commented upon regarding Bristol Rovers start this season.
It seems worthwhile comparing the average ages of the starting squads and overall squads of a range of sides in League Two.
In League Two so far this season the following can be noted:
1. Scunthorpe United (24th) have the youngest average squad age of 23.1.
2. Swindon Town (3rd) have the 2nd youngest average starting XI age of 23.9.
3. Tranmere Rovers (5th) have the oldest average squad age of 29.5.
4. Harrogate Town (2nd) have the oldest average starting XI age squad of 28.2.
5. Bristol Rovers (16th) have an average squad age of 26.9.
6. Bristol Rovers (16th) have an average starting XI squad age of 26.7.
The THREE sides with the youngest average age starting line-up are:
Swindon Town (3rd) Rochdale (18th) and Scunthorpe (24th).
The THREE sides with the oldest average age starting line-up are:
Tranmere Rovers (5th), Harrogate Town (2nd) and Colchester United (20th).
Does the League Two data for this current season suggest any clear causal link between the age of the playing squad and the overall performance of teams?

No But actual fitness and injury records do. The age comparison is to simplistic.

Any chance there are statistics for left-footed and right-footed players per squad/team and results (home and away)? Any chance there are statistics for goals scored (home) and goals scored (away) by said left-footed and right-footed players? Any chance there are statistics for goals, home and away, by a/ odd-number shirts on left-footed and right-footed players and b/ even-number shirts on left-footed and right-footed players? Etc.

It is simplistic for those who want it to be. Oldie injury and fitness records too are simplistic as they can depend on luck- if you get a bad tackle on you ie Nicholson it doesnt matter what age you are. If you look at the players that JB brought in. Hughes was pretty much ever present as was Coutts. Pitman played a lot of games for Swindon and Whelan likewise. Of course when you have a MOTIVE you can use any statistic you like.

I was just pointing out that his Stats were to simplistic when trying to determine potential outcomes.

Perhaps total number of appearances has an influence ?

Further to the O.P.
In the 2020/21 season the AVERAGE age of the playing squads for BRFC and FTFC were:
Bristol Rovers - 25.1
(This was predominantly Ben Garner's players)
Fleetwood Town - 26.6
(This was the players largely chosen by Joseph Barton)
The perception of the age composition of playing squads is not always supported by data.

And if Leon Clarke, Hughes and Pitman were fit and played with Whelan and Coutts how would the average age be looking.

And if Leon Clarke, Hughes and Pitman were fit and played with Whelan and Coutts how would the average age be looking. The most recent data added to the thread relates to the OVERALL AVERAGE of the entire playing squad. It is immaterial who plays. There is other data related to the AVERAGE STARTING AGE. This can be found in the O.P

Isn't the point that the backbone of the starting XI as Joey designed it, is made up of older (much older) experienced pros?
So the average squad age and the average starting age are sort of irrelevant to this discussion.
If the key players signed by our manager, as the plan to get promoted this season, are of a mature vintage, and are unfit or injured, then they will be replaced by younger players who are not the ones Joey envisaged being in his ideal first team.
So we might have a younger squad or first team than some thought, but the few 'good' players are crocked, unfit, or just simply past it.
