It's a rubbish competition that no-ones particularly bothered about, so let's just see it as a chance to give a few lads a run around for a bit.

If you are going to play as man y youngsters as last night you may as well send out a Supporters club XI. Too many headless chickens playing last night. If they had any interest whatsoever in winning the game then should have had a few first teamers on the bench.

I imagine, because we won the first game against Cheltenham, this one was a free hit, if we won it great, if not we can always "go for it" against Exeter in Nov to get through if we desire that. Suspect a different line up next time with more Fringe/1st team players in. Looking at the table, who ever comes out of the Exeter game with the win qualifies the other is out:

Awful tonight, Clarke is so unfit he shouldn’t be anywhere near the first team. I’d have Martinez in. Zain Walker worked so hard and without many better options I’d have him in the squad. Jed Ward is also a very good keeper but all he rest failed to impress and more worryingly were missing some fundamental basics Got to love the difference in opinions on here. Two posts above yours Clarke was one of the player’s praised. Then we get, he should be no way near the first team. I only watched the first half and I thought he was getting up and back well then? He was always going to tire though, as it was his first game for ages. I was actually shocked how unfit he looked, I get he needs games and minutes but I think he should have a base level of fitness before that. I actually thought that although Westbroke was disappointingly quiet you can see he has quality, he also looks fit!

On one occasion, he sprinted past Nicholson, who put it beyond the man and then Clarke crossed it. Maybe he faded. But I thought he was getting up and back well during the first half. Most wing backs, don’t get forward, for that reason. Do you expect to him to continuously sprint up and back, after not playing for ages?

Its a shame there are 2 away trips coming up. That obviously shaped the choice of team for this game. Ideally we would have fielded a strong team ,won the match and qualified . Leaving the remaining games purely for the youngsters with no pressure.
As it is Chelsea u21 are better than rovers youngsters.
Martinez obviously isnt a full back and needs to cement a position else he will end up a 'utility' player and always be a 2nd choice. Westbrooke and hargreaves are now surplus to requirements. Walker isnt upto league level. Mehew needs to up his game or wont make it at rovers.
Harsh appraisal but needed saying.
Disappointing result as at 1-0 rovers had it in their hands to kill the game off. They failed and Chelsea came back to win the game and deserved the win.

I’d prefer him to defend first something clearly missing, he even looked injured when he came out for the second half, no surprise he was hooked. I’m in the minority that likes the pizza cup, in a season that ain’t gonna bring loads of success it was a good opportunity to get the result, get through, earn some money (prize for a win!) and keep momentum of winning - after all aren’t we suppose to be building a culture!? it’s sad the club doesn’t see it that way, every time I played I wanted to win and paying £16 I expected better

I agree Richie. It was disrespectful to Chelsea U21 if anybody at the club thought we would win with that side selection.

I am not fussed about the result as I am not fussed about this competition. Sooner we are out the better. However, a win could have helped with confidence leading into Saturday after winning 2 on the bounce. But it wasn't to be. A weakened Chelsea youth side fully deserved their win and we didn't field a strong side ourselves so not embarrassing losing to a bunch of kids. The important thing was minutes for Thomas and Nicholson to get them ready for a bigger part for Saturday.

Feels like we have some talented prospects at the club, but what avenues do we have to help develop them correctly. It seems to me that there just aren't enough games for the teams lower than the first team? They could really do with playing a regular set of even semi competitive games to really test themselves and push them to improve within match situations. Would loans be the only way to do this? If so, should we not be allowing extended loans for multiple months rather than the 1 month that seem to have happened. Give them a chance to settle in their new surroundings? Our development team played in the south section of the Central League about 3 seasons ago which was what you described, semi competitive regular games. I don’t think it’s run the last couple of years due to covid. Looking at this website below, it seems there’s only a northern version of it this year, no south section. uk.soccerway.com/national/england/central-league/20202021/south/r58111/

I really hope Rovers put a slightly stronger team out down at Exeter and go through to the knockout phase.
It's each to their own I guess but I am another one of the backers of the EFL Trophy. Any competition the club enters warrants the fans support and a decent/professional approach from the management team and players. If we do go deep in the competition the crowds will rise and we all know what will happen if we did happen to make it to the final - haha Ticketmaster would have fun with that one!
I follow Spurs as well and I have seen the same negativity from their fans regarding the Europa Conference League - again I disagreed. It is a valid European competition giving lesser sides a great chance to experience an extended European football campaign rather than a couple of games in July. I think it is fantastic that a team like Lincoln Red Imps from Gibralter can be playing in the Group Stage. The latter stages of the competition will look pretty much like the Europa League and it will take some winning - Spurs v Roma final anyone? I also guarantee that the folks slagging it off now will be the first moaning that the ticket allocation for the final in Albania is ridiculous if Tottenham get there.
Apologies for going slightly off piste but the principle is the same to me.

I support the completion and it's an opportunity to progress to a National final remember Cardiff Millennium stadium packed with Rovers and Donny fans in 2007.
Plenty of members on here probably went and despite the defeat the day was fantastic and a pleasure to watch
Sunderland and Portsmouth in recent seasons took many fans to Wembley.
I support Rovers in any competition they enter. Good to see the Under 21s included in the tournament in my opinion.

I do not expect us to get much v Oxford, so will JB play a more experienced line up v Exeter in the PJ Trophy? Could be our only chance of any cup run money.
We could have Jakkola, Brown, Finley, Saunders and Hughes back from injury and then have a better mix of youngsters. Tomlinson and Walker should feature. (I thought players on loan in the National League could be allowed to play in the PJ games).

That's a shame it still isn't running as that sounds good to at least keep our younger players match fit and tested. Hopefully something else takes it place or it returns and we enter into it.

I just returned to this forum and just wanted to say I don’t care because this competition is tainted due to youth teams being included and as I believe it’s a pretext for b teams in the league, and a general reflection of the ambitions of big clubs to dominate the league system, I think these games should be ignored.
I believe in capitalism and all that but what is happening here is the big clubs are trying to get a hold of the lawmakers and control the government. It’s like pret trying to change the law so that small greasy spoon cafes can’t operate, essentially.
Keep the big clubs from controlling the authorities and legal entities who control the football pyramid and boycott this shambles.
