Good luck Kevin. Always like when members of our coaching staff move onto bigger and better things. Hope he can turn it around at Southend and get them back in the football league where they belong again.

Good luck to him. I’m still of the opinion that he should have been giving the caretaker managers role after GC left along with the other staff members helping him out. At least until the end of that season anyway.

The club can today confirm that first-team coach, Kevin Maher, has joined Southend United to take up the role of Head Coach at the Roots Hall outfit.
Maher made over 450 appearances for Southend over a ten-year spell during his playing career, captaining the Essex side to successive promotions.
The 44-year-old was appointed first-team coach at Rovers in the summer of 2019.
CEO Martyn Starnes commented, "Kevin leaves with our best wishes and we would like to thank him for his service to the football club. Once the formal approach was made and knowing Kevin’s strong connections to Southend United, we couldn't stand in his way to pursue this opportunity and we wish him the very best of luck in his future career."

Best of luck to him. Seems a decent fella, who got on with his job amongst all the upheaval over the last few seasons. I'll watch out for the Southend results, and hope it goes well.

Not sure he will be replaced. Surely we have far too many backroom staff and if Maher was in charge of the development side (and they never get any games), maybe it is better for the players actual development, not to mention cost saving, if we just got more young players out on loan.
Feel sorry for the likes of Cam Hargreaves. Plays one game every two months and people are very critical. How can anyone build match fitness and an understanding with team mates like that?

That is a big loss, if JB is found guilty and has to leave Maher would have been a natural replacement, we certainly don't want to bring another manager in from outside, who will change everything around and have us struggling again there have been far to many changes, we now need continuity, the next manager needs to be promoted from inside, but please not Kevin Bond with his awful record. Best of luck Kevin (Maher), you are going into a very tough job .

Good luck Kevin. Always like when members of our coaching staff move onto bigger and better things. Hope he can turn it around at Southend and get them back in the football league where they belong again. It has that sort of romance; when a "legend" (or cult hero etc) comes back to manage his club. You really want it to work out for them. You know the crowd will be absolutely buzzing. In my lifetime we have had it with Holloway... and that mostly worked out well. We also had it when Gerry Francis came back for a 2nd spell as manager.. which, sadly, didn't work out. To a lesser extent we had it when John Ward came back for his 2nd spell too. That worked out in the first season, but was a disaster in the next!! Any other times?

I really hope Mansell does well at Gloucester and is able to return in the future. That one will be the most likely for me and I always hoped he would be the one that would take over from one of the past disasters we had since GC.

Yeah, the problem is that kind of romance in football is usually short lived when the realities hit that the second time round might not be as sweet as the collective memory of the first. I genuinely hope that doesn’t happen with Maher, Southend desperately need a good appointment and this is Maher’s first break in football management. I think you’ve listed all the Rovers managers there, who have had two spells of management at the club. We’ve dabbled with it a few times but never had a Martin Allen figure like Barnet had. Kind of glad we haven’t to be honest, I’d much rather just keep the good memories of the likes of Trollope, DC ect, without worrying that they’ll potentially be replaced with some worse ones if the second tenure doesn’t go well.
