Last night’s fiasco highlights ( apart from other matters) the lack of reserve/development fixtures. The team that was cobbled together looked like they were complete strangers who had never met before. In their defence, when was the last time some of them had played a game, let alone a full 90 minutes? Surely we should be able to arrange even friendly games against clubs in similar situations? For example, do Cheltenham, Newport, FGR have a need to give their reserves/ youngsters a run out? Any kind of game would be helpful in our players’ development and prepare them for the first team.

Exeter's 2nd string last night from the highlights looked to play some nice football, with quick interplay in the final third. It would be interesting to know how many reserve/development fixtures they get into their players, because they always seem to produce quality talent.

Agreed think there were to many changes to be of benefit to anyone. Would have thought it would not be to hard for 1/2 dozen or more local clubs like Yeovil, FGR, Chelt, Newport, Swindon, Oxford, and Rovers to arrange home and away games over a season in a mini league? the players are there so only additional cost would be Travel, easily sponsored i would have thought.

It must be too hard or they'd arrange it? Not sure if COVID protocols make it all a bit harder for lower league clubs to arrange friendlies?

I remember going back a few years we struggled to get enough fixtures for our reserves and it seems to have been a chronic problem for us.

I think the truth is that even if there were regular Ressies games, we would still play them in the Pizza Trophy because the League is the priority for the club and making sure the first team players are fit and fresh for the Saturday. It’s happening all across football. Premier League teams prioritise league matches and champions league above FA Cup and League Cup. Most prioritise league above Europa League and certainly Conference as if they just take part in those lesser competitions through obligation rather than serious commitment. We are doing exactly the same with the Pizza Trophy and will only play first team in a final or maybe semi. What is the point? The only point I see here is the EFL finally being honest and accept the competition for what it is, reserve team competition and advertise it as such. To me it’s false advertising and these matches should not have tickets sold as Bristol Rovers v whoever. If I buy a ticket to see the first team, then I want to watch the first team. If we are putting reserves out, sell tickets for a Bristol Rovers Reserves Team.
