As we approach Christmas and the New Year, I’m sure that many of us will reflect on what has happened during the last 12 months.
It has certainly been a difficult time for our Football Club; relegation to the fourth tier of the English Football League (EFL) and differences of opinion between ourselves and the club we all support made for uncomfortable times earlier this year.
However, as I explained in my last newsletter, those differences have been overcome and my hope is that now the Supporters Club, together with all of the other support groups, and the Football Club can move forward together in 2022.
You will be aware of the personnel who now make up your committee, but I wanted to advise you that Patricia Gardener has now taken on responsibility for safeguarding and diversity and we will be exploring how we can all help Pat with these challenging roles at our next meeting.
We remain in discussion with the Football Club regarding a project that they would like to get off the ground in the near future and one that we have been asked to contribute to, financially.
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking Club President Wael Al Qadi for agreeing to provide free transport for supporters for our trip to Scunthorpe last weekend.
We had seven coaches fully booked to make the trip to Glanford Park but, unfortunately, the game was called off on Friday. That was a huge disappointment, but understandable given the circumstances. Please keep an eye on our website for news of the rearranged date for the game.
On Saturday evening Community Trust’s Christmas Party took place at the Memorial Stadium. It was another venture in which we were fully involved and, I’m pleased to report, was a huge success.
We continue to explore new revenue streams and I am pleased to advise you of a scheme we will be launching in the New Year which, I hope, will be of interest to all Bristol Rovers Supporters.
It’s what we refer to as the ‘caps initiative’; essentially, we are going to begin the process of awarding a cap to every player who has made a league appearance for the club. We will be inviting supporters to sponsor these caps and thereby raise funds which will, eventually, be earmarked for projects the Football Club would like help with.
We have already purchased 1,000 caps and the process of numbering them all will begin in the New Year, with the initial presentations taking place before the end of the season. It’s an exciting project and one that I hope will meet with your approval.
As previously explained, we would like to hear from any supporter interested in helping us in any way possible. Whether that be as a matchday volunteer or helping us with a podcast or video interview, a fundraising scheme, or contributing an article for our website, please get in touch.
On Monday our representatives on the Board of Directors, Helen Wigmore and Stephen Lamble, attended their first Board meeting. They were welcomed by Wael and were updated on the vision for the future of Bristol Rovers.
Away from football, it has been a trying year for us all with the pandemic touching almost all of us in one way or another and we can only hope that 2022 proves to be one to remember for positive reasons.
I will contact you all again in the near future but for now, and on behalf of the Bristol Rovers Supporters Club Committee, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
