This is a genuine question (not after a bite!!) but how much of an improvement has the team become? It's obvious there is a definite change of direction (in the right direction as well) but, for example, have we just gone from amazingly crap to just crap - or have we jumped a few places to 'pretty damned good'? I know we all like to see through rose tinted glasses but are we good enough for the play-offs or just a top half of the league team? For example the Hartlepool game (only a couple of weeks ago) we were pretty awful for 85 minutes and brilliant for the last 5 (which was the most important in terms of the result) but it looked like we still had a long way to go to be chasing the top teams. All teams will improve as the season goes on and they play more games together but are we improving enough to get above them? I suppose only time will tell and hopefully it will all come together. This is a tough one. It looked like we were starting to improve towards the end of last year, but then we had that period of COVID impacted fixtures. I was worried that we would lose some momentum. Thankfully we have ground out some decent results and have carried over a healthy number of games in hand to give ourselves some optimism. But looking at each of the games this year so far: Peterborough (a) - I didn't see it, but apparently it was decent performance - but with both sides fielding an under strength XI Hartlepool (h) - Poor until the last few minutes, lucky to win - but still 3pts Swindon (a) - A definite improvement on the home fixture, but Swindon's form has dipped recently. I thought they were there for the taking in the 2nd half, but we just couldn't find a finish. A decent point though. Scunthorpe (a) - A dismal oppostion who hadn't scored in 4 games. High expectation for this game and once we took the lead we started to look quite good against them. A 3-0 though we went to sleep and let them back in - fortunately not with enough time to really give us the full sqeaky bum. But signs of defensive frailty nonetheless - and against a VERY poor side. Walsall (h) - Another poor side, but we failed to dominate and our discipline was called into question again with Hoole being sent off. Bailed out by some awful opposition defending at the death. So in summary; our results have improved and we have put in some strong performances (in spells). But our opposition has been poor or out of form. The games against Sutton/Mansfield/Exeter/Newport will give us a better idea of where we are.

Agree with your synopsis there, what looks like a good chain of points against relatively poor teams, but we do have momentum and I think we can all see improvements, the next few weeks will show if we’re an improving mid-table team or playoff contenders. 👍 By the way, regarding your summary of the Scunthorpe game and falling asleep in the second half : You or the team? 😂

I was wide awake this time from the comfort of my sofa watching on iFollow. But I was captured in a crowd shot having a slow blink last time I was at Scunthorpe (a).. opening day of our first season back in League One

when Sutton played at our place i felt that they were a well drilled team who knew exactly what they had to do and each performed as expected. i saw no evidence of skilful play- just effective tactics designed to win games. They were evidence of how a team can be so much better that the individual parts. For much of the season we have been a club where the team is not as good as the sum of the individual players. This should be a game that we win.

I’m looking forward to going to Sutton Saturday, but I’m not getting too ahead of myself! Just hope we give them a proper game! UTG
