Let a small minority of the fan base decide more like it, aka the forum. Btw it’s none of the above. It’s abuse of position of the SC.

I’m pretty sure that when the club called us the Twelfth Man and announced they were retiring that number in recognition of the support we’ve given through thick & thin, they were referring to ALL Gasheads, not just the ones who subscribe to - or comprise the committee of - the SC. I know a lot of people will probably shrug their shoulders and say “so what?”, but there is a principle involved here and the upholding of a tradition that is cherished by a lot of Rovers fans.

I remember when abusing position of the SC was nicking a few hundred thousand out the till, this number 12 business is banging progress!

It was 2001/02, the club had been relegated to the bottom tier for the first time, the club was on its arse. There was a groundswell of the support base, some where SC people but not all, who came up with the idea to galvanise the support and grow the idea of Gasheads being the 12th man. Ok it was a SC person who went to Geoff Dunford but it wasn’t a SC initiative, the guy knew him well to talk to though. We asked for no 12 to be retired, the squad in match programmes to list no 12 as “Gasheads”, the shop had shirts pre printed with Gashead and 12, the hope was that it would catch on and loads of no 12’s would be seen going through the turnstiles each week. What sight that could have been? Also it was recognised that it was a bit difficult to refer to the fans as 12th man when a player was wearing that shirt. To his credit Geoff went for it. Ok it hasn’t ever reached the popularity hoped and the concept has all but disappeared to the point where the SC have disregarded it, but hell, a group of supporters got off their arses and rather than just chatting about an idea on a forum, did something real. We had a go. Did it work? No. Did we deserve to have the water taken 20 years later and be on the end of comments that it’s insignificant or not that important? Well clearly some do.

But it really isn't important is it. Let's get things into perspective here this is a small minority making something out of nothing and there is alot more important things in life than a number.

Indeed. Nothing but Americanised nonsense. Surely the #1 shirt should be set aside if any? And #2 for those who don't go away. 3 for iFollow fans and 4 for the rest of the plebs. 5 for you then Hugo 😂

It’s not about the f**king number though, is it? It’s about the club recognising that even when the club was on the verge of going out of the league and quite possibly winking out of existence altogether, it was our unwavering support, our not giving up, our sheer bloody-mindedness that helped save the club, along with Dennis Dunford and the other directors. THAT’S why it’s important to a lot more people than you seem to think. And just because 79 people on this forum “don’t give a flying f**k”, doesn’t mean there aren’t potentially hundreds or even thousands of Gasheads out in the real world who are genuinely annoyed/upset/angry about the whole thing.

If it means nothing to someone else, that’s fine. That’s their opinion. But you can’t go telling people that their feelings aren’t important. As I said in the other thread, the people who say this or that we’re ‘moaning because we don’t have anything else to moan about’ have a knee jerk reaction because they don’t have the debating skills or emotional intelligence to understand someone thinks differently to them. And if you look at the posting history of those ones saying these statements, not one of them surprises me that that’s their opinion.

I see both sides to the argument….. personally the options are too polarised for me but I get the sentiment…
My view is that I’m agnostic and not really upset by it at all - in fact part of me thinks it’s a good motivator loaning a player the 12th man shirt as it’s almost saying to that player that you’re that special and we think that highly of you that the fan base are your sponsors - don’t let us down. Deliver and you have the privilege of being held up by all the fans, whereas if you don’t then you’re letting the whole fan base down… Kinda high pressure, high reward approach.
I do understand why others may be more passionately against it though…
Hopefully E.Anderson delivers and does the12th man shirt proud…early signs were promising from his debut Saturday

If Geoff was still here it wouldn't have happened, but a lot of the people involved in the original idea on the Board/SC are not connected to the club either.
Tom G, Wael and Joey have little concept of the history of the club, and cannot be blamed for not knowing verbal agreements 20 odd years before they arrived and neither can Dave T or the vice chair.
I remember Tom saying shirt sales were the best ever at the club. What he meant was the best since he has been here. He could have been criticized for that but like the no 12 issue it is clear there was no harmful intention and people at the club genuinely did not know
Let's face it, lot of our own supporters didn't know anything about it either.
Let's move on. It has raised money (but probably added extra pressure for Anderson).
What is someone going to get angry about now. someone could say Alf Homer promised my grandad there would be roses behind the goal! What! there isnt any now - sacrilege!

Let’s be clear, in 2001/02 the idea came from the fans, not the club and not the SC.
That group of fans floated the idea on an old Rovers forum where there was good support.
Ok of that group one supporter was involved with the SC and he went to Geoff, although it was not a SC initiative.
It was meant to be just an informal sounding out chat, but Geoff went for it.
Look we thought it was a good idea and concept at that time when the Club was reeling from the shock and shame of going into the bottom division for the first time in our history. Of course worse has happened since!
One real disappointment here is that this thread and poll is mocking fellow Gasheads who got off their arses, stuck their necks out and actually achieved getting the club to adopt an idea and run with it.
For goodness sake everyone, surely that deserves some respect, yet this whole thread with an option for “couldn’t give a flying…” is belittling and an utter water take. It has also been done with little to no knowledge of how it came about or the circumstance surrounding the club or the feeling of the fans at the time. Back then the bottom division was a horrific idea, now we see used to it and whereas League One or Division 2 as it was then was seen as our bread and butter, it’s now seen as an achievement! You had to be there.
Have some respect. It wasn’t the success we hoped for but we had a go. How many voting above can say that?

I never take the forum vote seriously or who votes for what. But I can tell you something there are not hundreds and certainly not thousands that really care about this. Yes it was done when we were on our knees but times have moved on and people don't really care about what happened nearly 20 years ago it's been forgotten about by the majority.

Totally understand why some are upset - ultimately I agree with their point. I guess the next question is then "do I actually care enough to be upset about it though?" - the answer for me personally is no. That doesn't mean I don't understand why some would be though. Personally I do think it's poor taste - if a squad number was retired for the fans, it seems pretty poor form to go back on that. Hence sticking with the original sentiment wouldn't have exactly done any harm - it was the path of least risk/upset. - Keep 12 as Gasheads and those who do care are happy, those that don't literally don't care either way - Get rid of 12 as Gasheads and those who do care are angry/unhappy, and those that don't care literally don't care either way So seems a bit of a daft decision. My actual guess is that they simply forgot and gave it to him - was a genuine mistake. But once they realised, they were too scared to admit it as they were worried that admitting they forgot about it would cause even more offence than if they just dropped it and moved forwards.

If this is the case then it is hilarious, but a bit alarming, that rather than front up and admit the minor blunder they instead have called in a favour from the Supporters Club and drawn them into the web of lies Then asking Eliot to put a tweet out acknowledging the perceived significance of the gesture. I guess we will not know the truth until the official documents are released in 30 years time
